Help - dishwasher won't drain

My Haier dishwasher didn't wash the dishes last night and when I opened it there was water in the bottom of the machine. It was working fine up until then, it's only 18 months old.

I've checked the instructions and they're not very useful. When I try to switch the machine on, nothing happens.

Any ideas what I should do and if I call someone out to it, am I better with a plumber or an electrician?!

  • We recently had this problem with our Freecycle Bosch.

Remove the filter at bottom of machine and clean out any crud. You might be able to get to the impeller. Make sure that turns and then give it a quick wash.

You could also put the waste pipe into the sink to check if it is the diswasher or the waste pipe.

  • I've removed the filter and cleaned that out. Also removed the water with a plunger pump device that DH had in the garage. Once I'd done that I used soda crystals and hot water and forced that through the drain, so it doesn't appear to be blocked.

Put the dishwasher on to wash - empty but it only runs for 10 minutes and then stops and there's a couple of cm of water in it.

    Could it be the pump?
  • I'm bumping this question up again, hoping someone will answer.

I have an Indesit D1 620, the same happened. The water remains in the bottom. When I switch on the cycle, 1 beep sounded, and then nothing happens. A very faint humming sound could be heard, when my ear is placed on the door.

Pls help. Many thanks in advance.

I had a simlar problem with my DW not too long ago.

I removed all filters, and soaked them in a stardrops solution. I was staggered how much carp came out of it, even though it looked clean. I also got my hand down the cavity in the bottom and found a tiny piece of plastic which had snapped off my DW cleaner clip on thingummy that was blocking the drainage. I ran it on empty and hot with the filers replaced.

For Sharonbugs, im not sure whether its the motor, but it sounds like something that happened to me with mine ( hotpoint) is there any chance that the tap to feed warter in has got nudged to closed or part closed. This happened with mine I nearly paid for someon to come out as I thought it was the motor but what had happened is that it couldnt move onto the 2n stage as the water wasnt coming in!

  • If it runs at the start of the cycle and fills with water, then stops, it may be a heating element fault, as it will usually take in cold water, heat it to the correct temperature, then pump it round to wash the dishes, if it doesn't reach temperature, it won't continue with the cycle.

is it worth a try to see if it works on the lowest temp wash then? Mine fopr example washes at 45 +55+65, I usually run on 65, so it might hit the temp ( if sharons is simialr) on a cooler wash?

Thanks everyone, will check if the tap is not accidently switched off, and will post my problem at the suggested line.

We're gonna be opening up the machine tomorrow, hopefully will find the problem

  • I have had the same problem happening twice on our AEG dishwasher. The first time i called a repairman and watched him get access to the water pump, open it (jyst a 1/4 turn lock) and remove a piece of liver that had found its way through the filter. The piece of very smelly meat was lodged between the rubber blades of the pump impeller, stopping it from working. That cost me £40.......when the same happened again a few months later, i got access to the pump, got it opened and this time, the stone of a date was blcoking the darn thing. 20mn job but a saving of a repairman.....Morality, when you find water in the bottom of your dishwasher it is very likely that pump is not working (especially if you hear a sound coming out from within (pump trying to turn)).....find the pump, check it open and get back to us. Good luck.
  • Our Bosch DW had water in the bottom 1 time when we opened it over Christmas. Cleaned it out as discribed by Lynzpower. Ran the rince program still water at the bottom then needed to reset the machine (combination of buttons) no problems since.
