... They give customers money back if they had been charged for going overdrawn.

    I'd call that fair play.

i dont know how i missed it that they hadnt taken the payment, i can only presume its because it was near xmas and i had a lot of extra payments going through my bank account, some of which were also from asda.
And yes, had I noticed i would have phoned up to ask them why they hadnt taken it. i am actually a very honest person.

If you take your receipt to the customer service desk and point out their mistake they usually give you a gift card with £2 credit on it. I usually check my receipt now before leaving any supermarket as the mistakes are nearly always in their favour.

Me too! But a point ot note is that if you notice the mistake at the till DON'T point it out to the till operator, or they will just put it right straight away and you won't get your £2 card, and no record is made of the error!
Apart from gaining yourself £2, that way the problem is recorded at customer services and if it is recurring there is a CHANCE that they will put it right.

...... I always check my receipt on my way out the store and have had about half a dozen £2 cards this year......

i once bought somthing with my credit card and just presumed the payment had been taken.several months later i had a statement come telling me i owed this money and checked through old statements and found i did owe the money.the only problem that concerned me was that 3 months before the statement come i had cancelled the account after clearing the balance.its as though the bank reopened my account for them to collect the money off me without notifying me first to see if i owed or not.strange

Credit card accounts are never closed for exactly this reason. The card company have no idea how many pre-authorised transactions could still turn up and so these will go through to your account automatically.

All that closing an account does is stop new transactions from being authorised.
