Chest of Drawers - what kind will last? Help needed

We are looking to renew our bedroom furniture after finally getting fed up with collapsing draws! Our old furniture is solid pine and has lasted 15 years so time for a change. We dont want to spend too much but really want something that is going to last and is definatley not flat-packed. Most important is that the draws glide nicely and for a long time! - can you get a solid wood chest of drawers that glides or do we have to go for flat-packed MDF to get gliders?

I've checked out pine solutions and the prices are great - can anyone recommend the products? Many thanks

Highly recommend Pine Solutions yes for products, customer service and delivery service (search and you'll see a few of my posts on here praising them - anyone would think i'm on comimission but i'm not unfortunately!) and wouldn't order from anywhere else after! The Oxbury range of pine furniture which we have comes pre-assembled (except wardrobes that are part-assembled and very easy to put together). Takes a good quarter of an hour to get the chest of drawers out of all the packaging though! However the drawers aren't on runners on that particular range (just wooden guides) although they slide ok and sort of tip down as they come out and have stops so you don't end up pulling the whole drawer out! If you must have proper runners i'd call them up and ask if they have anything more suited to you.

Other advice as per my other posts on this subject is to avoid Tesco direct flat pack furniture like the plague - you have been warned!

I would see if you have any pine companies near you, there are about 4 or 5 local to me that I can think of, they source pine (new or reclaimed) and oak etc, they generally have a range that you can pick from (and they make up for you) a lot will also let you design your own,
these tend to be very well built, solid and if they have been designed to your spec will be ideal for what you want. I have found that these have not been too expensive (although the reclaimed pine was sadly a lot more than new) and althought the oldest piece that we have is only a few years old they look like they will last for ever
  • Have you had a look on ebay? You can search by items that are near you for collection - I brought an old victorian pine chest of drawers on there for £50 - extremely solid and well built - will easily last another 100 years and adds a bit of character

  • We are usually great ebay/car boot sale fans but this time wanted to get something new for a change.. I like the sound of Pine Solutions but Im a bit weary of buying something before I see it and then not liking it. Im going to search around for some pine shops locally so I can go and have a look. At least with solid wood the item will last a long time - mind you, that doesnt solve the annoying collapsing draws, our current chest of draws is solid wood and it takes me ages every morning yanking each draw out so I can get to the top one!
