First-time house renovation

OK, I know you're all gagging to know what's gone on at TomsMoms house this last couple of weeks so I've done a bit of an update on my blog.
:rotfl:
Hope you're not too disappointed! The video was the third or fourth attempt, I think I mentioned last week why I kept giggling.
OH's back in hospital tomorrow but hopefully not overnight. No chemo this week so as he's feeling not too bad at the moment I'm hoping the wallpaper will go up on the chimney breast by the weekend. And if we haven't got the curtains up I'll drape them over the settee and take a photo :rotfl: .
Bless you! :rotfl: I love it when people laugh and they aren't supposed to makes me laugh too, so I had fits of the giggles with you. That fire is absolutely lovely! Really nice :T Glad TD is not so bad this week - keeping everything crossed for him.
I keep driving past our house to look at our new gutters. The height of sadness:rotfl:

TomsMom you just had me giggling too! :rotfl:The fire is lovely! Its brilliant how it has the sound effects too!
The blind is also lovely, it goes really really well with the kitchen!
Shimmy - We pulled all our ceilings down, very easy to do and quite a lot of fun but the aftermath is pretty grim:
Ive read pros and cons of overboarding and pulling down the ceilings so I think its down to personal choice and how much mess you want! It wasnt too bad when we did ours as the house was a state anyway!
sethsgran - Weve almost finished our bathroom apart from tiling the walls, its actually very similar to latecomer's even the tiles are the same! I didnt copy honest! (Bathroom before tiles & Bathroom after floor tiles)
I havent really got any updates! Went to a firework show on Saturday at Belvoir Castle in Grantham and camped over so nothing achieved this weekend! The fireworks were brilliant though!
Next weekend is Leeds festival but its bank holiday Monday so we will hopefully get lots done then! Ill take some pictures of our new doors!
Right Im off to bed
Night all x0 -
I love that fireplace TomsMom!!
the vid was great too. We don't have anything exciting to take a picture video of in this house ... apart from maybe when OH fell through the ceiling ...doh! So yes we took some of our ceilings down. Omg it's messy!! We decided to do it at 10pm on a Sun evening ... big mistake grrr.
Just had a look at your bathroom Lisa ... looks cool. We haven't actually put any of our 'stuff' in and were planning to tile the whole thing first. Maybe this isn't the way to go?0 -

Sound effects :rotfl: . Well, at the risk of sounding really dumb, I was taking that video with our camera and after the "noise" I mentioned in a post last week I asked OH (stupidly I suppose) "Does this video have sound?" Now, not being a camera person (OH usually does it) I didn't realise that the video would have sound seeing as it takes still pictures also. So, of course, I couldn't leave that "noise" on (now, lots of people on MSE know that OH apple tarted on a video of the fire :rotfl: ) and I deleted it, and the next and the next.
So, most of the sound effects on that video are me breathing, me stifling the giggles, although there is a bit of a whistle and is THAT "noise" on there. The fan in the fire does have a soft whirring sound which is about the same sound as you get when a gas fire is on and can't really be heard if the TV is on (that may be the bit of a whistle). I tried really hard not to laugh, that's probably why the picture wobbles a bit, but it got to me in the end. At least I'm not guffawing like in the first few attempts :rotfl: .
We were quite disappointed when we realised we couldn't have the gas fire, but TBH it turned out for the best. We can now have the flame effect only on to make the room feel nice and cosy, which will be lovely in the winter when the CH is on, and of course you can't do that with a gas fire. We had one of those open inset into the chimney gas fires in our last house and it sat there unused except for about two evenings a year. So this fire cost us a LOT less than a gas fire, no installation cost, and we get the cosy look for the cost of running a couple of light bulbs. Well happy! Oh, and the flame effect is so much nicer IRL.0 -
Its amazing the difference a flame effect can have - definitely makes you feel warmer. Especially for the pyromaniacs amongst us
I have finally mananged to get the grouting finished - except under the pedestal which I need OH to help me remove first. Planning on doing it tonight as I'm on a roll and want to get the grouting completed. then I need to seal round the tile edges (ceiling and floor) and round the bath. The end is almost in sight............ I think0 -
I must have missed the bit about the fire where you said it wasn't 'real'! It looks sooo realistic!
Well done to you latecomer, that is brilliant good luck tonight!
We have finished digging the extension footings (when I say we, I mean mr JT) so I rang for the building inspector and had no idea we had to fill out a building control notice form in advance and pay upfront - may differ between councils but if you need building inspectors check you have done everything you need to. Our planner man didn't tell us, nor did our family builder. If all goes to plan which I'm not convinced it will, our concrete should be going in on Saturday. I cannot WAIT to get it started!!!

That's a really neat job Andy, all your hard work has paid off. Well done you! I can't wait to see it painted. When it's all finished I reckon it's going to look fabulous.0

You've done a good job there andy. I think your hand built units will be better/sturdier than my shop bought ones tbh, I just dont have the time to do the same unfortunately. Good to see your Sketchup plans working in reality.
:D You're a better person than me.
Ok...question time (it's probably obvious but I've been staring so long now that I'm not seeing, iyswim.....the 3rd pic in the shower series of pics.....a chrome rectangular 'thing'...what is it?
