i never had a steriliser at all, i just threw ds`s clean bottles/dummy etc into a pan of boiling water to sterilise and i intend to do the same with this baby. i can`t see the point in buying something just for the sake of it because you feel you have to
its only more clutter for you to find a home in your kitchen for.
proper prior planning prevents !!!!!! poor performance!Only when the last tree has died and the last river been poisoned and the last fish been caught will we realise we cannot eat moneyquote from an american indian.0 -

I dont quite fancy standing there waiting for bottles to boil on a stove when I'll have a newborn and a 5 year old to deal with thanks, this is 2008 not 1908.:j Baby boy Number 2, arrived 12th April 2009!:j0 -
Whats suits some Mums, does not suit others. I BF, but need a steraliser for OH or sitters to feed occasionally. I will not wait hours for bottles to soak nor do I want to wait for a pan to boil. I feel I already have enough to do as it is (what, with surfing MSE and stuff!!!!!)0

I think the previous posts were perhaps trying to help you save money...as this is mse .....and as it is 2008 using electrical equipment can be quite costly. Of course its tough when you have small children (i had 3 under 4) but you would be suprised how little of your time is taken up using some of the (now considered) old fashion methods, especailly if you are just making bottles up once a day to store in the fridge.
As for the original question ...second hand sterilisers are quite safe if in good condition.JAN GC- £155.77 out of £200FEB GC £197.31 out of £180:o. MARCH GC - out of £200

The microwave ones don't clutter your kitchen it can be stored in the microwave when not in use aslong as it has been cleaned and dried!
I had a mothercare microwave steriliser that was given to me by my cousin she had used it for her twins and no longer needed, it was great....until my OH put it in the mircrowave with no water in and it melted.. but i wouldn't have any problems with a second hand one again, why pay £15-20 if somebody has one they no longer need?0 -
I got one on freecycle to use whilst on holiday - was just going to leave it there...but I threw it as soon as I got it home as it was so dirty!
I guess look at it & if you are happy with the state of it then go ahead. Take a look at car boots & NCT sales as oyu can often pick things up a lot cheeper than e-bay.

I've got a microwave one that can double up as cold water - only takes 15 mins to steralize with Milton tablets:j19.6.10 Weight loss 6lb0

What's wrong with plain old sterilising fluid, at 99p a bottle? Don't see the need for fancy sterilising equipment.
The smell.
I had huge fights with my mother over milton - so much so that she nearly missed ds's christening! The smell really puts me off, so I was only using them that week we were away. My whole family thought I was trying to poison him with bleach! (yeah, just like they did in hospital with the pump bits )
I never got on with boiling bottles either - left gritty with lots of white residue
And I always burnt my hands on the microwave steriliser - using it at mother's as an emergency measure, which explains why I had to handle it when boiling hot.
I am definitely a steam steriliser kinda girl. I've polished mine up ready for the loft :wall:0
