In theory if you drive at 90mph instead of 60mph then you save 1/3rd of your time. However in practice on British motorways this is usually not true and the figure will be much lower than 1/3 time saving - usually because of congestion.

There are exceptions of course; such as approaching the evening rush hour, where driving quicker may actually get you past the congested areas before they are congested. I used to drive from Birmingham to Surrey on Friday afternoons leaving at 4pm. If I cruised down the M40 at 95-100mph then I'd miss the congestion around Heathrow on the M25. If I did 70 then I would hit it and cost me a further hour on top of the time taken by travelling slower.

As to the comments about speeding being bad. There are very few accidents on German motorways and if you drive at 80mph there you are crawling along. A bad driver at 50mph is more likely to kill than a good, alert one in a good car at 100mph+. If roads were clear and the police weren't so obsessed with speed then I'd happily (and safely) cruise at well over 120mph on motorways.
