I know where you're coming from. My mates want o go out for a meal every month which usually ends up costing about £50 a head. They were slightly incredulous when I said I would have to bow out as I couldn't afford it anymore. People really have NO clue!!!!!

Isn't it weird how it just does not compute with some people?! I get this at work too. We have a monthly lunch club and I get people saying, "It's only £30.................." or for a works night out recently, "It's only going to cost about £90 or so once you include the taxis and everything" Office trip out was a day trip to London and I said, "Can't afford it" and had to face the, "But the flights are only £30........................the Express another £25 and your share of lunch" (Again  )

I guess to them, having no money maybe means, "I won't be spending £300 on clothes this month" but for me it can mean literally having 20 p to last 2 or 3 days till pay day and having no food in.

Mind you, I think some people don't listen. My best pal, who knows I don't drink alcohol and that I'm a vegetarian invited me to her house for dinner and made rib eye steak and had a bottle of red wine in  You sometimes have to wonder how many people listen!
Almost debt-free, but certainly even with the Banks!

I used to have friends like that, it's only now that I don't know them anymore that I can look back and see how toxic they were.
Unless I say otherwise 'you' means the general you not you specifically.
  • I try and make it up by babysitting for them when I can as they like to go out for dinner a lot.[/quote]

I do this a lot for my mum....but I dog-sit instead of babysit!! They do so much for us that whatever I do in return seems so small, but I know they appreciate it. They went on holiday a few weeks ago and the day before they came back I cleaned their house from top to bottom. Didn't cost me anything and I know they were pleased (although they told me off lol!!!)

  • Nope, I've never told my parents. I was too ashamed. I'm not now but I don't see the point in worrying them now. :)

No they don't know all of it. Mum knows I'm trying to "pay off my credit cards", family knows we don't have much spare cash at all. But that's it. They'd all be shocked I think :o

One friend (single, not in debt, living with her family) keeps inviting us out for a pub meal and when I say we have the step kids too says bring them along - that would mean spending more than a weeks worth of food on one evening - even with choosing the cheaper meals (which aren't the ones the kids will probably want ). She means well but I'm feel like I'm always making excuses and tempted to just give her a little hint about our situation. I've already done the we don't have enough money for it this month. Probably should have said any month for the next 5 years :o

She does shop in charity shops though so we do compare bargain clothes ;)

  • I've told them some of my debts. The main one being my loan. I told them two years ago. It was about £12,000 left on it then. It's now down to £7,000. I haven't told them about all my credit & store cards.

They know I'm major debt and I'm working two jobs to pay it off. My Dad tries to probe somtimes but I keep putting it off. They would be in mega shock if they found out the total amount of debt. Might even kick me out. My Dad probably would but my Mum would be very supportive.

The main reason I haven't told them is that I want to deal with it myself. I got myself in this mess. It's my problem to sort it. I'm now in a DMP through Payplan.

Some of my friends know all about my debt. But they can't comprehend how I spent so much with nothing to show for it. Some of them also don't understand when I say I'm skint. I really am!! I've been in the position of not knowing if I can afford the petrol to get to work before.

Sites like this give me the chance to speak to people in the same position & still retain some anonimity. It's good to know that there are supportive & understanding people out there.

My husband knows but that is it. We live a long way from our parents and they have troubles of their own so wouldnt want to stress them. Hopefully in a year this will all be over though...
  • We have not told anyone about our debts, I know both my parents and my OH's would offer to pay our debts off (they are both financially ok) and that is the main reason we have not told them we do not want to take their money as we got ourselves into this mess and we will get out of it. We are on a DMP with CCCS and things are going ok with that.

  • Hi Guys,

My partner knows about all of my debt now but in the beginning i only told him about a few but ended up having to come clean.

My mum knows about a few of my debts but not about them all, think it would kill her knowing im in even more than she thinks.

Im getting there slowly but surely though!
