BT Broadband sucks!

I am not a techy sort of person and I hope that someone here will help me out with my query regarding my BT Yahoo Broadband connection that is costing a whopping £26.99 a month and now my internet usage, which I note from postings elsewhere, is possibly going to be further charged if I go over the limits set by BT.

I use the internet every day (I know, I am sad!) to look at various sites like MSE, BBC News, eBay etc., I do not download music, video etc. I send a few emails (without attachments) each day, but I do speak to friends & relatives here and abroad by using Skype VOIP pc to pc. The latter is the crux of the matter. Besides having many battles (where I never win) with BT and a now utter dislike of them, I worry that using VOIP will be one of the factors for preventing me “migrating” to a cheaper BT BB option. The partial reason for this is the fact that I have now found that the “Usage Meter” on my account page has now been removed and BT are saying something along the lines of “don’t worry we will notify you if there is a possibility of you exceeding that limit”.

I don’t trust BT; I think that they keep continuing to move the goalposts by announcing enhancement to the service they provide and in reality confusing their customers into over spending on services they did not want in the first place. One example is the fact that I have an Internet Security package, why do I need another?

Finally; am I allowed to say it? BT Sucks! Am I the only one here that feels that way as it just seems so crazy that here we are trying to save money and companies like BT try (successfully it seems) to claw it back by stealth.

lose the internet protection (drop to option 3), don't worry about VOIP as it only uses a little bandwith (3kb) on a 2Meg connection so I would not be concerned about moving to a lower price / lower cap provider if that is your worry.

it's not worth paying extra as you say for an internet protection Plan from them, there are many free alternatives that do the same job (AVG etc)

The flexible download thing would only cause you trouble if you are a huge downloader of files/music (which you are not) and they do email you if you reach your cap , but like thay say there is no charge unless you go over by a large margin every month

Nah, you're just late to the party :D

I switched away from BTOpenwound (the thing before BTYahoo) and the main reason was that BT being ever more intrusive in their promotion of the (IMO) worse service with Yahoo bundled (I could of course have gone for a whole hose of other ISPs and got a free Yahoo account with the same "benefits" of the BTYahoo! tie-up.

Secondary to it was that the price was premium rates for a mediocre service, which is the modern way of the world.
There are 10 types of people in the world, those that understand binary and those that don't

In many cases it helps if you say where you are - someone with local knowledge might be able to give local specifics rather than general advice

Yes I now know that. My old Dad always said that I was slow on the uptake!

I have taken the advice from Browntoa and gone for Option 1. However, they (BT) at one stage saying their offer is £14.99 for the first few months and then when I sign up as being an exsiting user the have the temerity(?) cheek to say that I am being charged £17.99 for a minimum of 12 months.

Now that I am being a "streetwise" when dealing me BT I did notice the invitation to a "fast sign-up to BT Communicator with Yahoo Messenger!" has been totally advoided by me.

    I don't want your b******t BT!!!!!!!!!
  • Got a bit of a result when I called BT billing after the above postings.

Spoke to a man in billing who, on his own admission, did not know all of the procedures but promised to find out why I was going to be charged £17.99 instead of the advertised £14.99 (for 3 months) AND no equipment upgrade. The latter he thought was needed as my BT supplied SpeedTouch ADSL Modem would not work on Option1. Anyone know why this may be so?

As I said, he has promised to find out why all this is going on, but has intimated that he will, as a gesture of goodwill, credit my account with £26.99 because I have been unhappy with BT.

    Will keep you posted.
