Same here, I'm a third year law student. Seems like only yesterday I was a fresher *sniffle*, and I had a year out because of my health!0 -
Haha great to hear, just thought if i created a thread then all doing the same course could help each other out with what books to buy, what we are struggling with eg finance, lectures certain topics!!

Hi good idea for a thread PoorPrincess. I've just went into 2nd year Law
I just bought my first book for this year. I got it from an Oxfam bookshop for £15.99 when its £32 new. Was very chuffed and it didn't have any writing in it. So its worth having a look in places like that for books and save some money.
Still having a shop around for a book thats £42 new so if anyone has any websites with cheap books to recommend that would be great.0 -
Hiya,
Can't buy any books cause student loan not gone in yet (long and frustrating story!).
But I have found law books in charity shops before now, the problem is they tend to be at least five years old which isn't that good really. Though I am sure if you are aware of any changes they should still be good to use. I saw EU Law by Deberker in a warehouse shop for £4.99 so may go back and get that.......Apart from that Amazon are always a good bet but I tend to get all mine from Waterstones in the first week cause I think they do a 10% discount for students for a while.0 -
Well i have been finding the cheapest online and comparing them, working out whether amazon is cheaper or whether waterstones is cheaper via Quidco as then you get your cash back for the book.
We got told this week that when studying a course such as Law you always need to have the latest edition of every book!!
Hope everyone is enjoying the first week at uni!

I do try and get the latest edition of every book but I also think that some of the older ones can still have a lot of the relevant info in them. I have a 12th edtn book and the 13th and there is not an awful lot of difference between them.
If you attend lectures and seminars regulary then they make you aware of any changes etc any way and then you can bear them in mind when reading the book....but there is a risk in that!
I would be enjoying my first week back were it not for the student loan fiasco.....! Can't even buy any books!
Has anyone who is a third year thought of what they are going to do for their dissertation (if they are doing it?)0 -
Mine is going to be about the proposed reforms to murder/manslaughter law. In the summer we had the debate over abolishing the defence of provocation and so on; it's going to be nice and topical. :j
At my university it is common practice to buy books from students in the year above (usually via ads on bulletin boards or emails circulated to others on the course) but of course might not be so good if there is now a new edition out. If the books are still current however, it can work out cheaper than buying them second hand online.0 -
I read about that in a few of the newspapers over the summer and I am thinking of doing that one too.....I drew up a huge list one night when I could not sleep but typically I can't find it now!0
