I've just got these 3 big issues around myself at the moment and want to kill them all at once ideally ... wonder if you can get "don't eat too much" patches, and "don't drink too much" patches?!

Have you ever got to the bottom of why you feel the need to do those three things? I don't think hypnotism will work in the long term because they are symptoms of something else.

For example, overeating is often a way of compensating for low self esteem or for the feeling of not being loved or appreciated. Cognitive Behavioual Therapy would be a good way to tackle why you are indulging in what is ultimately self destructive behaviour. Your GP may be able to advise you whether it is available on the NHS or, if not, where you can find a practitioner.

That is exactly why hypnotism can work. it addresses the other issues

Er where did CBT come from? wikipedia says " (CBT) is an umbrella-term for psychotherapies that deal with cognitions, assumptions, beliefs and reactions, with the aim of influencing emotions and behaviors that relate to maladaptive and dysfunctional appraisal of events"
Well if that isnt what hypnotherapy does I got the wrong training though I have trained with Donald Robertson who is one of the top guys for CBT though I think he calls it hypnoCBT. Because of the bad name derrived from stage hypnosis a load of other therapies and treatments sprung up which rely on the same principles as hypnosis but have different names ie NLP CBT CMT EFT etc
Who I am is not important. What I do is.

    hi Absolutebounder

aha ... so you're a hypnotist/therapist? am I allowed to ask what the 3 questions are, and as a professional, would you recommend against tackling 3 issues (albeit addictive traits) together?

    thank you:)
    1) what is the reason you want to stop
    2) will you please write out a cheque for X pounds
    3) When do you want to stop?
There are other questions as well like where and why did you have your first fag but these questions are there to find the underlying issues.
Over eating and boozing are treated in a fairly similar way. Essentially you have a parts conflict. Conciously part of you wants to give up, unconciously part of you doesnt. The unconcious part is the stronger one so you havent given up. We have to give that part something more interesting and beneficial to do.
Who I am is not important. What I do is.

But if you're commited to stopping, you wouldn't need hypnosis.

You could be right here but if you are not committed you wont stop anyway.

If patches weren't that good, the success rate would be a lot lower.

In independent tests they cant get much lower. They barely beat willpower alone

I'd been shown lungs in a bucket and it still didn't stop me.
    I don't know :o
No one who smokes doesnt know its bad for them. I think the worst part though is not being in control of your life. Always having to plan for that next cigarette.
Who I am is not important. What I do is.
  • The patches will definitely work if you use them properly. They will help you stop smoking; eating; drinking, whatever you want.
The secret is to use them two at a time. One over each eye.
Then you can't see where you put your ciggies down.
A good cowboy always drinks upstream from the herd.
A good cowgirl always keeps her calves together.
  • I stopped smoking 10ish years ago using Alan Carrs 'the easy way to give up smoking'

It also worked for DH and my MIL.

If you were to order it fron your library it wouldn't even cost you anything to try. It is an odd experience - you have to smoke while reading the book!! Cannot promise it would work for you, but it DID work for us. I haven't had one since, and I don't even think about it now.

good luck - these are all tough
  • . If it was people wouldnt be able to sleep for more than about 45 mins without needing another one.

Now I know why hubby wakes up throughout the night, I thought he smoked because he was awake & actually he's waking up to smoke.

Never let success go to your head, never let failure go to your heart.

I was hypnosed for a childhood problem and after going for several months the problem was solved!!! Two years ago I went to a hypnotist to give up smoking and did not work at all! So my advice is, if you REALLY want to stop then yes it will work! I personally don't think I was in the right frame of mind and was not committed enough!! Alot of money to spend if your not a 100%!!!
Sunday 23rd September 2007 I came to my senses and discovered fresh air!!:j

One of the ones I tried was Alan Carr. Lasted till next morning.
Thinking about it though, I was doing quite well with Paul McKennas video, you have to watch it every night for a while then it starts working, he's very good.

Donald Robertson may combine hypnotism and CBT. However this guide produced by the Royal College of Psychiatrists does not mention hypnotism once. http://www.rcpsych.ac.uk/mentalhealthinformation/treatments/cognitivebehaviouraltherapy.aspx
