Do you do Online Banking? Make sure you have security.

Options
Did you know that if your bank account is hacked or has funds stolen from it you may not be able to recoup these losses!

If it is found that you have insufficient protection on your computer to safeguard your online banking then the bank has every right to refuse to reimburse your account.

So what can you do and do you need to spend money?

No, you don't need to spend money.

Tips:
1) Get yourself a free virus sweeper like avast, it's free, easy to use and protects your computer and is regularly updated.

2) Always scan for malware and spyware using programs such as spydoctor, windows defender and adaware. Use all 3 to cover all areas.

3) Always always review your online banking certificates before you start typing in your online banking details, you will usually see a picture of a little padlock when you are on the login page. Double click the padlock and read through the certificate details checking the subject field and certificate information tab to see if the certificate is valid.

4) Always clear your internet history, cache and cookies before and after your login to your online banking. This removes possible tracking cookies and also removes information relating to what sites you have visited.

5) NEVER save your passwords on your computer either by typing them in a document and saving them or by using windows to save your passwords for you. If your system is hacked or infested with a trojan then these details are vulnerable.

6) Use a complex password e.g. Il1k3t0G05h0Pp1ng is translated to iliketogoshopping but replaces some words for numbers and takes note of upper case. If you find this too hard to do or to remember here is a tip. Grab your local yellow pages, pick a page and pick a company and telephone number. Now you can make a password. Page number 587 Company is Toolsrus and their telephone number is 0845666333 so your password would be 587Toolsrus0845666333. That is a strong password and easy to remember as long as you don't forget the page number and the company you chose.

Stay safe online!

How do I do that, can I just use CCleaner before and after?

I also read in a computer mag, use the "On Screen Keypad" rather than the keyboard when entering my account details, is this correct?

You do not need to do that at all. If you wish to do so, then yes, CCleaner will do the job (although your web browser can do it itself).

As long as your PC is virus/keylogger free and your using the banks website (not a phishing site) then it won't make any difference if you use an onscreen keyboard or not.

  • CCleaner will not pick up the hidden stuff so therefore combine it with adaware, spydoctor or windows defender for extra protection.

Providing as has already been said; you are free from virus and keyloggers either method of entering your online details are safe.

The reason banks use online keypads and online letter selections is to combat keylogging because no keys have to be pressed to enter in your details so the strokes cannot be recorded.
  • Probably more likely to be mugged during / after using an ATM etc!! BUT as you say it's good to be careful.

I use AVG A/V. Zone Alarm Firewall. AVG / CCleaner / Malwarebytes / AdAware
    I use FireFox Browser too

It's so convenient paying bills etc. on line.

not strictly true , the banks are trying to change the rules

    http://www.thisismoney.co.uk/credit-and-loans/idfraud/article.html?in_article_id=446991&in_page_id=159

The Code states customers will be able to reclaim lost funds 'unless you have acted fraudulently or without due care'. However an addition to the Code in March says a precaution against online fraud is to 'use up-to-date anti-virus and spyware software and a personal firewall'.

they failed on this first attempt but I don't see them giving up on it , expect the rules to get tightened

  • I used to use the onscreen keyboard method for typing bank details, someone suggested keyscrambler which is available from

    Seems to work fine. Alan.

is there anything the banks may require a mac to run if they change to the new rules on reimbursing fraud. I don't know anyone with a mac who has AV at present although most use FF 3.0.1 for online banking rather than Safari.
