HELP - Next have give me a credit card

Options
Hi all,

Earlier today I was checking out some furniture at M&S, Next and Tesco Direct online.

I added about £800s worth of furniture to my Next basket and decided to proceed through the checkout as I wanted to see delivery costs etc. I gave my name, address, email address blah blah blah and then got to the end without being prompted for my card details.

I was shocked to get to the confirmation page and it showed that I had £200 left on 'my account'. Next had only gone and created a credit card account for me! I didn't want a credit card! I just wanted to see how much delivery would be and would then buy tomorrow using my debit card.

I tried logging into my account but I needed a 'customer number' which I don't have and hasn't been emailed to me. I called their customer service number and spoke to someone who tells me that the customer number will arrive in the post in the next 7 - 10 working days!!

Oh my God, so I have £800s worth of stuff coming without having paid anything and I can't even cancel it! The lady can't cancel my order because it hasn't gone through the system.

Has anyone else had this problem? I am concerned that anyone can register with basic details and suddenly order loads of goods worth nearly a grand.

I think it's rather sneaky and I've already spent money calling their customer service centre.

  • They do a credit check if you just ask for a catalogue to be sent to you!
  • Thanks.

So if I didn't opt for the catalogue, I would have been able to pay there and then (without opening a credit account)?

Phone them up and complain again!!! That is awful!!! Ask to speak to a supervisor or manager saying you never agreed to a credit card or store card and you want the card and the order cancelled IMMEDIATELY

    Nuns! Nuns! Reverse!

'I do my job, do you do yours?'

  • Thanks Kavanne.

The lady told me to call back tomorrow 'when the order has come through' which I'll do. I explained to her that it's so easy for Joe Bloggs to open an account in anyone's name.
  • Isnt it a bit naughty for a company to give you a credit card without specifically telling you that you are entering into a credit agreement?

My wife and mum got nabbed by two of those floating salepeople at a motorway service station once...I came out of the shop to find them both giving details to two ladies.

I asked what was going on and the woman insisted they were just taking details ' so that we can send you some information' - I dug a bit further and eventually they admitted that yes, those details they were taking would be used for a credit card application.

I made them tear up the forms there and then (and got a few grumpy reponses about 'we have to make up a quota each day')

I was just wondering what furniture it was that you have ordered?

I've just added a few different things from the furniture section into the basket and the delivery charge is displayed in the basket along with the items.

This is the screen that's displayed when you click on the 'view bag :: checkout' option, you then have to actually click 'go to checkout' option before it asks for any personal details... so as far as I can tell the delivery charge is displayed without the need to register as a new customer, it's not like it's even hidden away.

When clicking to register as a new customer it gives the option of taking out a Next Directory or not. There's also the box which needs to be clicked to confirm you've read and agreed to the T&Cs, which state if you open a Next Directory account then you'll be sent a credit agreement etc etc.

Technically, it's not actually a credit card. It's more like a store card, but without the card. It's the same as any other catalogue company which provides credit.

It's not really totally Next's fault if people don't read what they're ticking yes to. The information is there if people take the time to read it.

    Great post

They do send you a store card though ;)

    Jodie,

As you haven't "signed" anything, I don't see how you can be bound by it.

One way or another they will need a signature on a credit agreement, or, AFAIK they cannot enforce payment. And that will probably influence whether they deliver you any goods. :D

    Have fun

You're right, they should be able to produce and signed application from, or something which you've allegedly agreed to.

To prevent this happening in the future:

  • I totally take on board what some of you have said about reading the T&Cs etc. When I was going through the checkout, I was assuming it worked like any other e-commerce website where you get to a product confirmation page with all costs (delivery, tax, any hidden charges etc) but when I got there and assumed I was reaching the card details page (it is at this stage that I know all costs have been detailed) it was the end of the process.

I have never come across a website where you can so easily get through the checkout process without a hint of payment. Yes the T&Cs do state the credit, but it is NOT made clear on the pages during the checkout. Of course, if I was actually serious about making the purchase I would definitely have read the T&Cs. Only including this credit info in the T&Cs is a bad consumer experience and makes it easy for customer to open a credit account. And yes, the customer service rep confirmed that it IS a store credit card.

In any case, I called Next this morning as advised last night. They tell me that the order has not shown up and the order confirmation email I received was an error. Not sure whether to believe it as the customer service rep didn't sound sure herself. There were no managers available and after trying the internet department a few times, the rep said they were all busy. She said they would call me back, but if I don't hear from them within 48 hours I would have to call back again.

So possibly three phone calls to cancel the agreement. Can't log on to my account as my customer reference number will get to me in 7 - 10 working days. Bad consumer experience.
