Can I Get A Refund On My CC If I Have Been Scammed?

  • Further to my earlier posting and following comments re CPA (continous payment authority), if you report the card as lost or stolen, the new card will have a different number. Therefore, any one attempting to charge against the old card will be blocked. Any charges against the original card number will be refused as the account is effectively closed. Thus it is impossible for CPA to happen if the preseribed step is taken. Have you done this stressedout??
If you read the link to Matin's article above, you will see that cancelling your account does not stop CPAs from continuing!
  • Not reported it lost yet but will now. I read somewhere they could still use the old details but reading your post says different so I'll stop it and get a new one. Thanks for all your help.

Well when I "lost" a card when leaving Virgin.net's ADSL service (after I was paid up already), as I heard from others Virgin continued taking payments for months after ADSL was ceased. And was a nightmare getting a refund back.

I reported my card lost, and therefore was re-issued a new card with new account number. At the time of the CPA being used for the next monthly charge by Virgin.net, I got an email from Virgin saying the payment had been rejected by the Credit Card company.

So, basically it worked for me.

new on here just wanted to give a bit of advice, closing the account wont stop a cpa! neither will telling the credit card provider. If you send a letter/email to the company cancelling/withdrawing from the subscription and keep a copy, this can be used as proof of cancellation for the credit card company. So if the company were to debit you again next year the credit card company can then qith this 'proof' use the chargeback process to claim the money back from them (this mean company will incur a charge from their bank, so they are not likely to do this more than once). As long as you have the proof you have attempted to cancel this will be accepted its in the regs for visa/amex and m/card.

CPA's can be difficult to cancel by phone but if you can get a postal or email address you can use the regulations for cancelled recurring subscriptions to help you.

Sorry for the essay could think of an easier way to explain. hope this makes sense.

ok do it that way, problem being depending on the bank lost and stolen cards may/will be linked they are not a cancelled accounts and because credit card are a GFP because the CPA has been authorised with an existing open and valid card the card issuer will honour it. Depends on the system for cancelling cards.

    just trying to help.

The accounts would still linked & the CPA wouldn't be cancelled. When the card issuer creates a new account, the old one is retained and linked for issues like CPA.

the authorisation has already been given when thing was set up. the cpa is set up from the first payment and the details then. yes they couldnt set up a new one once the card has been 'lost' because any details would be invalid problem is its already been set up.
