Hi there,
Due to BlueYonder upgrading me to 4 meg for free, I have downloaded quite a lot of copyright free material just lately. My hard drive is getting a bit clunky now and I would like to give it a good defragging.
Any opinions as to the best one? Is the built in one in Xp any good or is it worth getting a third party one?
I'm running XP pro on a Seagate SATA drive.
Cheers.

There are views that frequently defragging a modern hard disk can be a bit of a waste of effort. However, if you disagree with that view, the in-built XP defragmenter does what it says in its name, and doing it every few weeks or so would make everything look tidy again. And it's free!

I would use the defragmenter in XP about once every 1-2mths this all depends on how much installing and uninstalling of prigrams you do as this is what mainlt affects
the drive readabillity structure, ie, slowness.0 -
The XP one is a cut down version of Diskeeper. It won't derag MFT's, boot time defrags (neccessary for certain files/folders to be be defragged).
Alternatives:
Diskeeper full
O&O Defrag
Raxco Perfect DiskHug provider for depression thread :grouphug:

You may have noticed in Fig. 04 that even after the drive had been defragmented, there were still gaps showing where no files were shown as being present. What are these gaps and why weren't they eliminated by compacting the files to the beginning of the drive? It's due to limitations imposed by the Lite version of Diskeeper supplied with XP.0

I use Diskeeper9 frrom executive software. I run defrag under the 'set it and forget it' option and am happy that my pc is continually defragged at the times that I chose on set up.
