is it possible to have a combi system on oil? would this be recommended or is an immersion tank better to keep? Also can u get tanks that let u know if u are getting low, and what would people say is a reliable and efficient boiler to get? thank you:D

Sarcasm'll get you nowhere - tut,tut!
We have an oil fired combi boiler, fitted three years ago, since there is no gas in our rural area. It is a Worcester Bosch and seems to work perfectly. However, you will need an oil storage tank nearby and many people don't like the loss of garden or the sight of the tank. Oil is not cheap and you need to keep an eye on the oil levels to make sure you order more oil soon enough.
We have a Watchman oil level guage that is wireless and simply fits into any indoor convenient power socket. It seems to be reasonably accurate.
Can't help with your other queries so you want to ask on the In Your Home board which is probably better frequented than this one. Hope that helps and I was joshing, by the way.0 -
Hiya
Jumping on board here, what do you mean a wireless oil level guage? Me thinks I need one of these. How does it work?
We only have oil, as we have no choice and with the cost of it >60p/ltr then I am being super keen to try and minimise our use of it. A handy guage watching thing would be ace.....Total debt 26/4/18 <£1925 we were getting there.
Total debt as of 28/4/19 £7867.38:eek:
minus 112.06 = £7755.32:money:

We've got one of these - its okay for a general idea of your level of oil, but atm I'm double-checking, looking with a torch as I've been waiting for prices to drop.
Its based on calibration using the height of your tank in 5cm units and sends a signal to a receiver that plugs in a normal socket.

sarcasm? me? yeah right okay
:P
got the oil tanker already, just got an immersion upstairs, and a boiler downstairs, and wud like to get rid of the immersion water tank, does it cost more tho to have a combi thats on all the time?0 -
We've got a combi oil boiler, but it was in the house when we moved in. Unlike gas combis, the oil combi has a hot water boiler component, so it stores about 8 litres of hot water, rather than heat it instantaneously.
Over the summer, we had the water on timer for the morning and that seemed to do the trick for us.0 -
so if u could choose, which wud u have and why, a separate water tank and boiler, or an oil combi?0

I'm happy with what I've got. I believe that the house used to have a separate boiler before we bought it. In the roon where it used to be kept we've installed an upstairs shower room, given that the water was there already!0

had our combi oil boiler for about 11 years, we did have a electric immersion but had it taken out when the oil was put in, also have a electric shower, dread to think how much our electric bill would be if we still had the immersion on every day. at least we can have a shower if i have no oil which i dont at the moment.0

I can't imagine that a oil combi boiler would be that efficient. Starting up a boiler wastes old and I would imagine a combi would do more of that. At least with a tank the heat lost heats the house. One of the standard ways to improve oil efficiency is a clever thermostat which burns for longer and doesn't short cycle the boiler.0
