How much is a church wedding?

  • £496 - no choir or bells as they only have a single bell!

We don't mind though as we love our church. It dates from the 7th century and is beautiful and unique - a very special place. We're happy to pay that to help with the upkeep and the congregation are absolutely delightful.

If money is an issue then look for a venue where you can have a civil ceremony and haggle on the price.

Ours is going to be £400, plus £60 for the bells.

Includes organist but not a chior (an extra £150).

And as ours is a Catholic Church you will need to post your intent to marry with the council, that for us was £30 each, (not sure if thats everyhwere in thoe country or just our disctrict council)

ours was 504 which included everything except the heating. We did pay the flower ladies 75 to cover the flowers but the donation to get them to do the flowers was included in the main cost. We also had to pay 43 to get the banns read in my local parish. It was money i would have paid at the expense of anything else as i really wanted a church wedding.

WE paid £270 for our church but he didn;t charge us any extras, and we didn;t have an organist or bells as we provided our own worship team.

  • I am the Wedding secretary for our church and our fees for this year are
£ 430 - that includes everything you need to get married, Vicar, verger
organist, flowers in church, heating and certificates, the only extra costs
would be if either of you lived out of the parish to have your Banns read in
your own church approx £ 35 and a copyright licence if having a video £ 30
We don't have any bells though i'm good with a tambourine if pushed.

I do sometimes wonder how some churches come up with the costs that
they do - I realise that there is upkeep we all have that to contend with
but if the cost of marrying in Church is put beyond the means of most
along with some clergys views on remarriage after divorce how does the
Church expect to get bums back on seats !
i'm living in a parallel universe

Without wanting to take this thread off topic, you don;t do that by becoming liberal and ignoring the teachings of the Bible, you do that by adhering to God's will and plan and doing His work. My church (which I didn;t marry in due to building works) doesn;t charge for a wedding at all - but then it only marries its members, and won;t marry non-Christians. Perhaps if the CofE had this similarly Biblical policy it too would have 'bums on seatsin the way the evangelical churches do.

Anyway, that's probably for another thread. :)

Fees for the C of E are set by Parliament each year and are currently £272.50 for a wedding including home banns. Away banns (if one of the parties lives outside the parish) is £34 including the certificate. This is the statutory minimum and is what our church charges. Unfortunately we are not allowed to waive fees for members, which seems very unfair. The only extras we charge is £50 for the organist (and he is damn good) and £10 for the Verger, who sets it all out and clears up afterwards. Flowers are up to the bride & groom. Some churches are clearly cashing in, which is a shame. We don't even charge extra for heating in the winter - we want to encourage people to get married in church even if they are not card carrying Christians. Incidentally, the residential qualifications for getting married in church have been relaxed from today.
I used to think that good grammar is important, but now I know that good wine is importanter.

I want to get married in a church or in a country club not quite decided yet. Im not religious at all and neither is my OH so i guess its a bit hypocritical :( I dont go to church but i've seen two really nice churches one in my area and the other in my OH's area. We don't mind paying either but do we have to attend church every week before we get married as i know my cousin had to.

There is absolutely no legal requirement to attend church, whatever the vicar tells you, providing one of you has the residential qualification (rules relaxed yesterday). If however you need to go on the church's membership roll (because you don't meet the residential qualification) then you do have to worship "regularly"; but "regularly" could be interpreted as once a year!

  • If you want bells it is usually a fee per rope. Two of our churches have 6 ropes making it £96 and the other church has five making it £80. You can't cut the costs though by only asking for say 4 out of 6 bells - it sounds awful if you leave bells out that should be there!
