Yorkshire Water

We live in a 4 bedroom house and pay £600 a year for our water. Does this seem a lot? Just interested in how much other people pay in 4 bedroom houses. We also pay by 8x monthly direct debits. We are not on a meter.

  • How many people live at home as if you went on a meter that's what the charge would be based on, not the size of the property.

There are 4 adults and we have a large vegetable garden ( has needed watering only twice this year!).

  • We pay around £18-£20 per month (for 12 months) and two adults live in our house (we have a power shower + dishwasher).

So for 4 adults that works out at £480 (approx).

Could you get a water butt to collect water for the vegetable garden or bathe together :D

When we got our meter installed, we could revert to being charged by rateable value within one year of installation (or application for meter, sorry can't remember). However, when the property changes hands the new people have no choice other than to use a meter.

Your water rates are based on the Rateable value of your house - pre council tax days.
Get a large water butt to collect rain water in for your garden if you decide to get a meter - YW charge £92 for a meter, but if they can't install it INSIDE your house it is free - but they will probably do a survey first to check. BTW I'm with YW and on a meter

Thanks Ms Chocaholic and sprob for your quick replies. We had an extension built in 2005 and thought then that we would have to have a water meter installed. Our son has 2 showers a day. We have two power showers which we love but try to have very quick showers.! I will suggest a water butt to my husband but he uses a hose to water the vegetable garden so not sure how this could be used with a water butt.

Put a tap in the side near the bottom or just take the lid off and dunk your watering can in - thats what I do

Or try a water pump connected to the hoses - free water!!
