Ski-ing in Lapland

I've booked for my 10 year old DS and myself to go ski-ing in Lapland in February.

I went ski-ing when I was 10 years old and haven't been since.

I'm really not sure what we should be taking clothing wise.

As far as I can tell I need the following;

normal underwear
thermals
Salopettes - do we just wear these over the thermals
Fleece / polo neck type tops
Jackets - will my "outdoor walking jacket" do? Inner fleece and waterproof outer.
Gloves
ski socks
wraparound sunglasses with elastic cord
moon boots
Rucksack
Woolly hat.

I intend to look in T K Maxx, Matalan, primark and on e-bay. Anything advice would be appreciated. Should I apply the same clothing principles to my son as well as to myself? ie. same amount of layers.

As much as I would love to go year after year, I think this is going to be a once in a lifetime trip, so I will probably try and sell on the stuff when we return or will just end up keeping it and probably not wearing it again.

Haven't been to lapland, but that is what I do in the Alps. Merino wool thermals are the best

Should be OK as long as it is waterproof. You can wear more or less layers underneath it

It really is worth getting goggles for low light/when it's snowing. I take both out with me and swap between sunglasses and goggles as required.

I have been skiing in lapland many times - in feb it will be busy as it's the Finns half term but it will not be mega busy like the southern european ski resports

it can be very, very cold with temps easlilty reaching -20 and below so you do need to be prepared

the other thing is that I would suggest you take goggles over sunglasses

you will need a proper ski jacket with a snow skirt as the snow can be plentiful and deep

So am I right in thinking that we need normal underwear, thermal underwear on top (tops and bottoms), then a polo neck, then a fleece, then salopettes, then a jacket?

Seems like a lot - not sure I'll be able to move with all that lot on!

you need layers - we usually wear silk bottoms and tops (these are very thin and lightweight) then a thin fleece layer (top and bottoms) then if it is really cold, we wear another fleece top and then the outer gear - we also use neck gaiters as you can pop these over your mouth and cheeks - hats and gloves and silk glove liners

I would recommend you definately have something to cover your face when skiing as it gets freezing on the slopes and if you are wearing helmets (which naturally I am going to recommend) then you may want to get balaclavas, at least for your daughter

you will still be able to move about in all those layers as they are not thick and you will need them, it's something else the extreme in temps, at around -17 your nose hairs freeze up ;-)

I live in Lapland, northern Sweden. I can recommend that you wear layers as poe.tuesday rightly pointed out. Yes, it's cold but a very dry cold and if you're going to be fairly active then don't overdress yourself since you'll be sweating and very uncomfortable. Good idea might be to take a small ruck sack with additional thin layers either to wear or put what your wearing into. Gloves, I would recommend mits instead of fingered gloves. Or, you might want to get yourself a large pair of skin mits to put over your regular gloves. Cold hands are your worst nightmare.

Normal underwear, long johns on top. A good thin and long scarf to keep out the chill and some lip cream for the icy dryness. Thin layers are best, thick clunky clothing will not be suitable as you'll sweat and lose heat.

Apart from that - have fun!

we are fine thanks savvy - we are off again to lapland for the new year, the OH has now got his own snowboard and I've got my ski boots and we can't wait to go back again - are you planning any snowboarding trips at all and if so, where are you going?

Ha ha.........................omg I'd love to see him snowboard again, but then I guess he'd love to see me fall off the damn draglift again too!!! :rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

Tell him to get somebody good to set his board up for him, I'm assuming he's got the boots too, as it really really helps you out tons! I got my kit set up with StanceFind at the snow show a couple of years back and it really makes a difference!

We haven't got round to booking anything so far, been busy trying to get info to claim refund from Zoom for my eldest's Canadian trip last month :rolleyes: So he probably won't be able to afford to come with us this year which is really annoying

Whereabouts are you going this time, back to Levi??

Ha ha, I always find that a thermal base layer and one other thin layer over that, then a proper snowboard jacket is more than enough as you are moving around a lot...........easpecially if you fall over tons like me

A Buff to wear round your neck and to pull up over your nose is really useful and of course a hat to keep the warmth in Invest in some good socks tho!!!

yep, he has the boots too and the snowboard is still in my living room !!!!

we are back to Yllas - love it there, we may go to levi for a day trip but our main thing is to ski over the fell to the jarvi side and if we can do the run down we will otherwise we will take the new gondola down, I think the kids will be fine but not sure if OH and I would be, not great on red runs yet let alone black so I will need to find some nice gentle runs down if possible - also the snow will probably be different that it was the last visit so snowboarding may not that much fun on ice, but the falling will be ;-)

sorry to hear about the zoom flight - what's the chances of you getting your money back?
