As I said on another thread, when McCain had just taken a poll lead, Obama will win because ordinary Americans have real hopes and fears about the economy and their personal futures.
Yet it's complicated in America because it seems to have been some Republicans who were most opposed to the bail-out and in tune with Main Street anger, so Obama has to tread carefully.0 -

With all this financial drama now playing out in the background the American elections have certainly taken an interesting turn.0 -

Oh dear. I see that ndg and I have both fallen foul of the MSE thought police spell checker which doesn't allow the correct spelling of Canute i.e. C n u t.
I said interesting - I don't think I made any moral judgment (-:
I tried to spell it the correct way, but noticed it got bleeped out....much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0 -

I hope this helps.

Emma never despaired. She always moved on, to the next husband, the next country or the next plot. What a girl!0 -

Not sure if the following is accurate in terms of figures, but the most read/popular comment on BBC News "Have Your Say" comments thus:
Forty million Americans can't afford health insurance; the minimum wage hasn't been raised in 10 years and the country has one of the worst poverty levels in the developed world. Yet as soon as the rich squeal $700 billion is magically found. America needs a second revolution.

But they have nice teeth.'Just think for a moment what a prospect that is. A single market without barriers visible or invisible giving you direct and unhindered access to the purchasing power of over 300 million of the worlds wealthiest and most prosperous people' Margaret Thatcher0 -

Those will be the ones with the health insurance
There's a great little poem "King Canute" by WM Thackeray
".........If a frown his face contracted, straight the courtiers dropped their
jaws; If to laugh the king was minded, out they burst in loud hee-haws"...........
"......King Canute is dead and gone: Parasites exist alway"0 -

I read a very interesting biography of her recently, which I would recommend.
She was certainly good at being pro-active - no wilting violet!...much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0 -

Republicans seem to be opposed to the bail-out because they want it to come with more deregulation!

One of the strange things about the US is that many people vote Republican, even if it goes against their own personal interests, because the Republicans are seen to uphold the religious values that they deem most important. So much for separation of church and state...0 -

to help sway a few Congressman - most of whom, but only 2/3 of the Senate, face their electorate in November.
1/3rd actually -- Senate terms are 6 years long and staggered. But all members of the House of Representatives are up for re-election as their terms are 2 years.0
