Normally it's a 10 minute walk however I was running late so had to run and it took me about 3 minutes. I got on the trains sans ticket as the train just pulled in and the only machine was on the other side of the platform so there was no way in hell I was going to get there and back before the train left.
However when asked for my ticket and after me explaining that I was running late I was greeted with the ice cold words of "I am sorry but I am only handing penalty fares on this train"
So what normally is a £10.20 rtn is now a £26.20............

Excellent. :T I do love to hear about and watch the idiots that try to ride for free get caught. Their embarrassment is priceless (Mastercard should do an advert along those lines). Used to cost me £60 a month to go two stops on the train to work and I always ensured I had the correct ticket. Why the hell should I pay while free loaders like you travel for free? I do hope the embarrassment made your toes curl and your palms sweat. I bet you got right monkey as well - they all do, like shouting is going to make any difference! :rotfl:0 -
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW, the sheer audacity of OP!!!!!!!
more to the point, why don't Southern have toilets on most of their trains?!0 -

Is it just in the south they charge you a penalty fare?
Here (in Newcastle) if you don't have a ticket they just charge you the cost of a standard open return.0 -
yes its down to network operators

yes its down to network operators
Or to use the correct term "Train Operating Company (Tocs)
I can understand the confusion among many people about who does what and to whom on the present railway system. The privatisation of British Rail resulted in a real dog's breakfast. Where there was just one company there are now over a hundred, all doing their own thing.
Thus you have Tocs, Roscos (railway stock leasing companies) who own the rolling stock, train engineering companies (tescos) who maintain the trains. Then you have Network Rail who look after the track and signalling, numerous companies that carry out the day-to-day renewal and maintenance of the infrastructure, various rail-freight companies, a spares company, and then various research and development companies.
All the above functions used to be carried out "in house" by BR which only required a third of the government subsidy that the present set-up needs. What part of "A whop bop-a-lu a whop bam boo" don't you understand?0 -

Network Rail maintain the lines, and signals
You buy tickets from the train operator. (Virgin, First Great Western, Arriva etc)
The two lines do not cross, and neither is responsible for the other. My dad works for network rail hah.
They're not in charge of the train services at all.. they just fix the railway lines!
Think you two are telling porkies. Network Rail never fix the lines and just swallow money0
