Network RAIL!!!!!

Ran to the station at 0650 because I decided to get into work since it was my last day, I normally catch the train at 0740. Normally it's a 10 minute walk however I was running late so had to run and it took me about 3 minutes. I got on the trains sans ticket as the train just pulled in and the only machine was on the other side of the platform so there was no way in hell I was going to get there and back before the train left.

However when asked for my ticket and after me explaining that I was running late I was greeted with the ice cold words of "I am sorry but I am only handing penalty fares on this train"

So what normally is a £10.20 rtn is now a £26.20............

Huh? But you always need to get a ticket before boarding a train! They have big signs up everywhere saying that all those without a ticket will pay a penalty.

If you travel to work by train normally, how come you didn't have a season/weekly/monthly ticket?

You can't even get onto the platform in the South East without a ticket!
Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)
  • You're blaming network rail because you got up late????
  • Maybe something to do with the fact that the guard get 5% of all ticket sales he makes on the train....

Still, rules are rules - you took your chance and you got caught - sorry.

Guards don't get any money from the sales. It goes to the TOC

It would have been clearly marked it was a penalty fare zone, You decided not to buy a ticket that is your responsibility.

It isn't even network rails fault, that YOU were late, they only operate the track.

Network Rail don't sell tickets on Trains, it's whichever Train Operator owns the franchise.
  • I doubt very much if Network Rail are to blame at all, Apart for some very large terminals (such as Liverpool Street) they don't own any stations at all. Most stations and ticket machines are owned by Train Operating Companies.
What part of "A whop bop-a-lu a whop bam boo" don't you understand?
  • £14 vs 10 mins extra in bed - bargain ....
  • My dad works for network rail hah.

They're not in charge of the train services at all.. they just fix the railway lines!

Agree with everyone here. It's your responsibility to get to the station on time to buy a valid ticket. How are they at fault here? The ticker inspector has probably heard every excuse under the sun. Your case is no different.
  • I work for Network Rail, and to clear things up for you:

Network Rail maintain the lines, and signals

You buy tickets from the train operator. (Virgin, First Great Western, Arriva etc)

The two lines do not cross, and neither is responsible for the other.
