Hi guys,
I'd really appreciate some help here as I'm getting kinda stressed about this. My laptop charger has stopped working (due, I think, to my brother borrowing it - without my permission  - to use on his laptop of a different model). However, even though it's only a year old, I can't seem to find anywhere on the internet, even the manufacturer's website, that will sell chargers compatible with my laptop model. It's a Sony VAIO PCG-6R1M. Does anyone know of a website or other place where I could get a charger, preferably at a non-astronomical price? I really need it for uni next week
Thanks very much in advance xxx

Thanks so much for the quick reply, Browntoa! It really reassured me in my stressed state, lol.
I didn't know you could get generic chargers - is there any drawback relative to the model-specific kinds? Also, my old laptop charger has 19.5V written on the side; is the fact that this charger only has 19V and 20V in its voltage range a problem?

guys in Maplins normally know their stuff....just ask them
if there are ANY light coming up on the charger then it may be a break in the wiring of the charger (normally right next to the end that plugs in the Laptop )
strip back the outer casing and you may see it's snapped , solder the ends together and tape up with insulating tapeEx forum ambassador

Hiya! That time my desktop packed up so I had to fix that
There's no LED light when I plug it in... normally there's a green one. That's not good news thenMy brother said (from when he was using it) that it gradually died over a period of time and now doesn't work at all.
I'll ring up Maplins tomorrow to see about that charger - maybe they'll have another recommendation.

Is your laptop still under guarantee? I had my charger replaced under my Dell warranty (the only time I have ever paid for an extended warranty, and it has been worth every penny!)I'm a retired employment solicitor. Hopefully some of my comments might be useful, but they are only my opinion and not intended as legal advice.0

It's just over a year old... and I definitely didn't pay for an extended warranty! I'll check it out though, thanks for the thought. My parents' home & contents insurance covers accidental damage, as well... maybe I should ask them to look into that angle. (The laptop was free from the insurance company after my brother broke the previous one - are we seeing a pattern here?
) Will report back!
Am feeling much more hopeful than when I started the thread, I knew this was the right place to comeLive on £4000 a Year Challenge member

tbh I doubt that it will be worth claiming on your parents insurance - the excess will probably be more than the cost of a new charger!I'm a retired employment solicitor. Hopefully some of my comments might be useful, but they are only my opinion and not intended as legal advice.0

Your laptop is a VGN -C2S/P not as mentioned. Some AC adaptors are not supplied now. You will need the type number from your faulty unit and go to the sony vaio web page HERE
They are not cheap.0 -
You're probably right LazyDaisy, but it's got to be worth asking!
Thanks very much for pointing me to that page, TS. Unfortunately my charger is one of the ones which is no longer sold  It's only a year old! But now that I have the other product specification ('VGN-C2S/L', apparently) I might be able to find it somewhere else?? I'll ring the sony people as well as the maplins people tomorrow morning and see what they say. Would be very grateful for any other suggestions since you seem to know what you are talking about
My brother is feeling guilty and will I think chip in all or some of the cost depending on how expensive it turns out to be, so that's something!

So using the new product specification I was able to find this: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/SONY-VAIO-VGN-A417-VGN-A517-LAPTOP-ADAPTER-CHARGER-C30_W0QQitemZ260280514668QQcmdZViewItemQQimsxZ20080829?IMSfp=TL0808291922r5153
Looks promising?? And definitely not as expensive as I'd feared! Thanks so much for explaining that to me, TS - it was really helpful! :ALive on £4000 a Year Challenge member
