Co op Cash Minder Accounts, easy set up over the phone

I was going to add this to my own thread, when and if I can find it, but I thought I would add it as a new thread.

I had been dreading getting a new account, had to close my 18 year old one when I went into an IVA in 2005 I opened a step account with Nat West. Have to say not had any problems with it at all.

Til of course now, I have to go BR due to IVA failing due to ill health, hope that explains some of it for those who have not read any of my posts here, and now have to face the Nat West may not want me anymore.

Well not been well this week, come home after only 5 hours of work to fall asleep on sofa til 6.30ish. Have done some of the things I set myself, like read the notes and the forms for BR, have to say only got a few questions on those as I do not own a property.

Well today I took the bull by the horns, and rang the number for the Co-Op. And I am going to now add the conversation for all those people out there like me who are cacking their pants over phoning and getting an account.

It may seem very obvious to those who have done it how easy it is, but to others like me the whole idea was daunting, bad enough in 2005 with Nat West, but I did that in person at a branch before the IVA had been accepted even. And that was bad enough for me at the time! I guess I still feel like a criminal, even though I know most of the debt was my mistake in trusting OH at the time, it does not leave you even 3.5 years down the line.

So a very nice lady answered the phone, and asked what I wanted, I said I would like to open a cash minder account. She said this was fine over the phone, but will take 15 to 20 minutes to complete the forms was that okay, I said yes.

So you know have your OLD or current bank details in front of you and an up to date payslip as well, makes life much easier, also know what your rent or mortgage and council tax payments amount to.

The replies here are mine as given.

First question was; Have I banked or did I with the Co-Op or Smile (who the hell are SMILE) reply NO.

Next full name and title

Next telephone number and address and post code.

She then asked how was the weather here, I said not bad, and how was I, I said not too bad but having to go BR, she said she was very sorry to hear that.

She then told me she had to read me certain terms and conditions, I said okay, she read them out, normal type of things and I agreed to them. One was bank charges, I asked why do you charge for the account, or is this if you go overdrawn, NO account is free, and you are not allowed to go overdrawn on this account, I said GOOD.

Asked was the application just for me, reply YES.

More things to read out about Data Protection Act, and sensitivity, ie if I had a standing order paying into a union or political party this information could be shared, reply NO problem. (me give money to a political party!)

If I wanted to view what information they hold on me I can, but would cost £10 again NO problem.

Next was that the checks done would be on my credit scoring (oh shucks me thinks, thats this account out the window then) reply NO problem. This is also used to confirm who I am.

Next up is fraud, checks with agencies ie the Police and any fraudulent activity can be passed if say money laundering is suspected, reply Okay. (what money I aint got any let alone WASH it)

Date of Birth : given

Resident of where: UK given and is that where I was born, yes

House: rent, mortgage etc, so reply rented and from whom, furnished or unfurnished, replied unfurnished, how long at address. given, said you must like it there then.

How much is council tax, given.

Monthly rental amount, given

Employment details, company, gross earnings, monthly take home pay. How long with the company, and job title.

Bank details, Nat West Step account number and sort code and how long have banked with them, all given.

Status, ie married, single divorced, given as divorced (think it threw her as I am a MISS but you can be even afer divorce if you revert to your maiden name), think she asked was this in the past 6 years so reply was No.

What cards did I have, NONE, ie credit cards, catalogues, NONE. Cheque guarantee cards, NONE. Said I have the solo card from NW that does not count she said, as basically only the same as an Electron card which the coop give you.

Asked for something ie a name I would remember if asked for security reasons, replied to this.

Email address. given

Then she said she would tell me about other services, ie did I have a car, when was the insurance due, house contents insurance and when was it due, as they have very good rates for both, gave dates on renewals of both (since realised I was 2 months out, and will look at what they have to offer on both as well now)

She then chatted asked how old my son was, what was his name, I asked her what her sons name was, it was all very informal and pleasant.

Then she asked (odd I thought) did I pay tax or was I exempt I said NO I will be but right now I pay tax.

She then asked who had recommended me to the Co Op I said lots of people, and about this site, she said she always misses Martin, not sure where she misses him, but she was very interested to know that my recommendation had come from here, and she would be telling her manager.

AND then she said oh well done it has been successful, we do not need any more identification from you and you should get your welcome pack in 3 to 5 days. Here is your application number and a phone number if you have any queries. And would you like to ask me anything, I said yes on DDs and standing orders, she said OH dont worry, in the pack there is a mandate form, you fill that in with them all send it in and we deal with it for you.

Now that is what I call an excellent service and I told her she could tell her manager that as well.

So if you are sitting there like I was putting this off, and if you have no problems with the Co-Op (ie they are a creditor) get on the phone asap and open your account. She did tell me that they look "kindly" on people in my position, she was one lovely lady, and now I have to look forward to my NEW account.

Hope this does help some of you out there.

  • Nice to know you had a good experience.

Mine was similar but I had to take 2 forms of ID into the branch once the application had been approved. As I'm currently a student, I said I was unemployed and the only income I have is my child benefit and that was not a problem at all.

I also mentioned I'm going bankrupt and I'm studying and then had a nice conversation about the fact that the girl on the phone is starting her LLB this September and how interesting the course is.

It seems they are a very friendly bank and I'm actually glad to be banking with them.

I hope so OAM, as it took me a week to just do this, I was so scared with the IVA failing and the credit checks someone would laugh at me down the other end of the phone and tell me to get lost, I could not have been further away from the truth. She was a lovely lady and it was a 20 min call but at the end of it to be told it was successful made my day.

I guess as someone about to go BR and the implications it all holds even something like this, that to others may seem a small feat for me was a mountain climbed, and if I can help others get over these barriers which they are for some of us, then all the better I type it up. I have a tendancy to write it all down when on the phone, which is what I did today.

  • I had a Cashminder account with the Co-op for years with no problems at all. A couple of years ago they upgraded me to a Priviledge account and again I've had no problems with them. Very helpful and friendly staff and they couldn't have been nicer to me when I needed to temporarily extend my overdraft limit a few months ago. Fair play to them, I did try other banks who were offering incentives for having accounts with them but ended up feeling relieved that I didn't close my Co-Op account as they were nowhere near as good in terms of customer service and at the end of the day thats what really counts!!!:rotfl:

The only real difference I had was that for some reason it wasn't accepted there and then but referred. I'm not sure why but the lady was very reassuring and said that 95% of the accounts that are referred are later accepted and to phone next week to find out if it was accepted. I didn't need to phone in the end because a few days later the welcome pack arrived. My only problem has been for some reason my pin number hasn't arrived but I suspect that is more a royal mail problem than a coop one.

  • Poor guy that I spoke to didn't even have a chance to ask me my name before I blurted out - "I'm bankrupt"! All done and dusted over the phone.

I did however learn a sharp lesson a couple of weeks ago. I got my sums wrong because the TV licence had gone up, so was charged £19.50 for non-payment of the DD. I was short by 12p in my account! Won't be getting my sums wrong again will I?

  • Hi Rylynn,

Thanks for posting that as I have been putting off phoning for fear of being laughed at, think I will be able to do it now.

  • DebS just remember after three "mistakes" the co-op can withdraw your account

Thanks Rylynn, its something i keep meaning to do (for the past 18 months:p )

I dont want to really as i would be happy to leave things as they are, but may not have a choice soon, so at least i will know what to have to hand, rather than searching for it while making small talk:rotfl:
Thats it, i am done, Blind-as-a-Bat has left the forum, for good this time, there is no way I can recover this account, as the password was random, and not recorded, and the email used no longer exits, nor can be recovered to recover the account, goodbye all …………. :(
  • Hi Rylynn,

I called Co-op on tues to arrange my account and was cacking it as well...got the same response as you...they were fab! really chatty and generally really nice and not like everyone else who tends to judge on going BR! Got my welcome pack yesterday and have to take some forms of i.d either into branch or get certified and send but i've no probs with that and now actually feelin a bit more positive!
