What a ill informed IFA to suggest such nonsense, perhaps steering you towards a more lucrative commission based investment?

It wasn't an IFA who was supposed to have said this but an FA - probably from another bank and afraid that all the money is going elsewhere.

Ahh yes you are right Jem.

Even worse then, I can just imagine the conversation, as they sell a highly unsuitable and poorly performing product under the false guise of being "independent".

    One born every minute.

    To the original posters:

Never, ever take financial advice from banks or building society "financial advisers" they not independent, regardless of what they might say.

If you want proper financial advice regarding investments, seek out a professional IFA.
  • Just checked my 4 ftd accounts, all set up through my gross registered savings account. All are quoted as having interest paid gross. Only 1 R85 sent in, to set up original account.

Funny how people moan because they can't be bothered to find out the correct information, or telephone to sort it out. Pure laziness.

Kaupthing are a great company, from my experience, I have two accounts with them, and nothing but exemplary service. They offer top rates, and I like others are a very happy customer.

I could agree more. I only have one account with them, but had much better service (and interest) from them than any other bank I have dealt with. Highly recommended to all.

Thank you for this. I have been with Smile banking for over 20 years and only every completed one R85 even though I had three separate accounts with them at one time all paying interest gross.

Last night I sent an email to the chief executive of Kaupthing Edge at their London Office and within half an hour received a call from one of the executives at the bank telling me that the email I had received from one of their staff certainly did not make sense. He said that if I looked at the account this evening I would find the ref to tax deducted on the term deposit had been removed - and it has! The point someone made about two accounts at one bank under one person's name requiring two R85s is ridiculous. How can I be a non-taxpayer on the first account and not on the second? In any event they should not be referring to interest that has not yet been earned and the tax that will be deducted from it.

It's not ridiculous in any way
If you read the notes on the R85 form you will see that HMRC state that you need to fill in another R85 form if you open a new account.
    http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/forms/r85.pdf

The reason for this is that the additional interest earned may make you liable for tax. Its up to you to declare that you are not liable its not for them to assume.

The interest that will be earned and the tax that will be deducted are there for information purposes. That way you know how much to expect at maturity. Much better than many organisations who leave you to work it out for yourself.
I find Kaupthing Edges internet banking to be one of the clearest and simplest to use out of the many accounts I have.

All I'm saying now is how much I agree with the sensible majority here.

    noh sums it up perfectly:

Cheers for KE from the sidelines ;)

No problems with KE here. As others have said, pleasant Geordie lasses on the phones and a decent web site. The interest rate's not bad either!
  • Another happy customer here :-)
