Netbooks (mini laptops)

Options
for those that dont know netbooks are mini laptops, you may have seen them, they have small 8-10inch screens and weigh normally under 1 kilogram.

im trying to find the best one for my money because i'm a student at uni so my budget is very tight. i've done a fair bit of research. but i just need some external opinions.

i have about 250 maximum to spend. and my preferences are:
1gb ram minimum (or 512mb if its cheap/easy to expand to 1/1.5gb)
atom processor is preferred
dont want it to weigh more than 1.2kg
needs to be a netbook, so small like an 8.9inch screen would be good
not too bothered about the os, linux or xp is fine, dont think the netbooks would run too quickly on vista.
i do want it to run quite fast as im quite impatient lol.

Thanks for your help! :money:

Been looking myself for my mum to use and we're planning on getting the Advent 4211.

I've had two Asus Eee pcs (actually, I still have two, must eBay the 701); A 701 and a 901. The 701 was great, but I found the screen a little small at times, hence the purchase of the 901 which is everything I want in a netbook. Decent screen size, fast, portable and unbelievable battery life.

Downside is that it's a little out of your price range at £263 (with voucher) from Pixmania for the next four days. That's a very good price! It's the 12GB Windows version. I have the 20GB Linux which is not on offer, so a wee bit dearer.

The new Eee PC is fantastic, Linux or Win XP - it's hard to beat, gets rave reviews.

I would question that, as a student, something with such a small screen would be suitable, especially for assignment/report work ??? Surely, with a £250 budget, you could pick up a decent "full-size" laptop and it would be a much better all-rounder than a netbook ?? Just a thought.....

Agree with Gunjack, you won't want to be typing a disseration on an EEE / acer. The 10.1" Akoya mini / MIS wind / Advent is the lowest you should really go for. You do sometimes see the advent on offer for £249.

I agree with the above two posts. If you want it to use a lot for writing, work, or as your only computer, then a full sized budget laptop will be better. Dell have some bargains in the Inspiron range.
  • It really depends on why the poster wants a small notebook.

I currently have a jvc mini note and the build quality is poor so I am also looking at replacing it possibly with a netbook due to size.

I used to get terrible rsi problems on a fullsize keyboard and as a type a lot I require the smallest keyboard possible. When other people type on my keyboard they cant see how I manage but I have found it to be wonderful and wouldn't dream of going larger even if it were cheaper.

the other issue is weight. I have a neck injury so dont want to carry anything heavy.

there are lots of reasons for wanting a small notebook :)

yea the reason i want a netbook is because its small, i dont mind the screen sizes, i have an inspiron 6400 from dell, but its getting on a bit. and now i need to get a bus to commute to university, so im trying to get as lightweight as possible. i'll just put a bit of ram in my dell and have that as my main media station.

I think i'm going to get the acer aspire one, comet are selling them for £179.99 which i think is a bargain! :D heard they are quite good! also a note on the aspire, i think its only 95% of the size of a normal laptop keyboard.

i do understand it might be quite annoying to some, but i'd choose it over carrying the extra weight around on the bus. lol.

    Thanks people!
  • I am actually finding that because everyone has jumped on the bandwagon of producing and churning out tiny netbooks with no cd/dvd drives that I now can't get what I want at all - which is 10" screen or less (currently have 8.9) with a small keyboard but a useable one with aa optical drive, decent storage and decent spec. These dont seem to exist any more.
