Ryaniar and checked in luggage

Just came back from dropping son off to catch Ryanair to Ciampino. I was surprised to find out he had to pay £20 because he did not tick the checked in luggage online which seemed very expensive to me compared to easy jet. I have been checking Ryanair website and was more surprised to see that the £20 he paid was only one way. He will have a shock when he find he had to pay another £20 when he returns to Luton. I am really mad at him and I do not understand why the fee is almost double if you check in at the airport. I guess, this serves him a lesson. A return ticket that costs £90 which he thought was cheap but when added the extra charges can be quite expensive. When should he do next time to avoid all these extra charges or are they the norm? Thanks

The unfamiliar should book ryanair flights with a friend, two pairs of eyes are better than one.

He should travel hand luggage only or tick the box online to say he has luggage to check in.
  • Flying with Ryanair is a total false economy! You look at the flight prices and think it's cheap, and then they have ridiculous charges for absolutely everything! Like your son I didn't read the small print and got caught out, we checked in 1 bag between the 2 of us (as they charge £8 just to check in at the counter with no bags, or £22 if checking in a bag, but if it's a booking for 2 you can't have one person check in on-line and the other at the counter, but if you book separately, they charge you 2 booking fees - so they have you every way really!!)

Anyway, we got caught out with the baggage allowance! We were 5 kilos over, which we expected we'd have to pay for, but didn't expect that we'd need to pay £84!!

The cheapest way to do it, is to check in on-line, and only carry hand luggage - but be very careful of the weight allowance! Or if possible - just fly with someone else!! :rotfl:

    Rant over! ;)
  • Hi.

    I'm just confirming.
    I have a flight booked on November. I selected Check-In Online - 0 Bags.

I can still take a piece of hand luggage can't I? It won't even weigh 1KG.
  • I booked a return ticket from Gatwick to Shannon in today's "sale". Fare was £0.00 return, with taxes this came to £43. Then you add £20 to have checked-in baggage, £10 (!!!) to pay by DEBIT CARD and if you're not careful, they will automatically add insurance as well. And don't even get me started on "priority boarding". Trouble is, I can't travel hand luggage only even though I'm only going for a weekend because I always pack a razor, contact lense solution, deoderant etc. and can't take these in hand luggage.
  • Hi. In reply to you question you can take hand luggage up tp 10 kg and it has to fit in them silly things at the airport the measure your bag. hope this helps. Emma

Yes, as long as it doesn't contain any restricted items (liquids/pastes/gels over 100ml, scissors, nail clippers, razors).
  • I had the same problem as you. It all adds up the tax bumps everything up. Its all add ons and thats the problem. When you see it online you think what a bargain and then when you finish you some how feel ripped off. I only travel with Ryan air as my nan and Grandad live in a remote part of France and the airport is tiny! if any other airline Monarch e.t.c i would rather travel with them! Emma
  • I totally agree with you but unfortunatly ryanair only travel to where i need to get to :(. Emma
  • Flew Ryan Air once and never again. Although I booked and didnt need to check luggage in I just find them so rude, unhelpful and generally a total rip off for even the small price to pay. xx
