Despite all the PR it looks to me like a very simple situation.
One of looking round for some money to finance a transport plan.
Tax is a good way of collecting money.
Taxing business is convenient, and, after all it's their employees who are commuting.

I think that there are many in the political world who have no idea of how a business operates and assume that it's a vast pot of cash generated by exploited workers and then locked away by evil bosses.

Gordon Brown has nothing to do with Congestion Charges.
Gordon Brown has nothing to do with car parking charges.
Gordon Brown has nothing to do with workplace car park taxes.

Blame your local money grubbing council.

Apart from the Transport Act 2000, so that might be Tony Blair.
The plan has to be approved by the Transport Minister though. It was Ruth Kelly until a few days ago.

  • We already pay tax on parking spaces where we work. Why shouldn't you be taxed on something that's a benefit?

You already are. Your employer pays for those spaces. That money reduces their profit. Reduced profit = lower wages. Add a new tax, and that's even less profit, which is even less wages.

It's to do with the Labour party, of which he is the head of, so yes it's down to Gordon Brown as well.

And suprise, suprise, Nottingham council is controlled by which money grubbing party?

Gordon Brown reduces money from Central Government to Local Government - local Council has to make up the money from somewhere.

Nothing to do with Gordon Brown ???

I think that the Labour party see business as a very large pot of money, owned by an evil "mill owner", exploiting workers and therefore the target for tax. I don't think that they generally understand that small/medium businesses take a risk and put a lot of effort into getting off the ground and sometimes run on the edge for many years.

Yes, I'd say that is very much how he thinks, this was a very good article that was in the papers in March this year.

To keep it on topic and relate it to cars (also note it was one of his ministers not the journo that made the statement).

GB can relate to someone aspiring/wanting to own a car, but he can't understand why someone who had had a Mondeo for 5 years, wanting maybe to own an Audi/BMW etc. i.e. He doesn't understand why they don't want to stick with the same type of vehicle, why they want to get a "better" car.
