Benefits, not enough stamp etc

I am currently signed off work as sick although was unemployed when this happened. I am uneligible to get incapacity benefits because I haven't paid enough NI contributions. I have just finished a four year degree and am 23, at which point in my life so far would I have had the opportunity to work full time to pay enough contributions.

Same reason is why I can't claim JSA.

Any help?

  • Part time work of 16-20 hours a week at minimum wage would have paid your 'stamp' ;)

Thanks for replying, I have worked before part time but in a shop where it was cash in hand

Cash in hand means no NI or tax paid.
  • Cash in hand means no NI or tax paid.

Thanks, anyone know if there is a way to pay a lump sum of NI in order to recieve incapacity benefit? Similar to the way you can in order to get your state pension?

Have you been sent the form yet? Used to get them sent when I wasn't earning so much, they say "you've not paid enough...pay £XXX if you want this to count as a stamp year"...

Out of interest, how many years do they want you to have?

You can make voluntary NI payments but they will not help you to claim Incapacity Benefit.
  • Can you not claim means tested JSA?
  • Can you not get Income support as you are sick and not entitled to Incapacity Benefit.? Are you getting sick certificates from your doctor?

Wouldn't you be eligible under the Young Persons rules?

"You may be able to claim Incapacity Benefit even if you haven't paid enough National Insurance contributions if the following apply:
you're aged under 20 (or 25 if you were in education or training at least three months immediately before turning 20),
you've been sick for 28 weeks
you're present and resident in Great Britain for 26 weeks in the year before you claim.

Not sure how many years they didn't say, just that I don't have enough.

Can't get anything as I have a partner who works full time at minimum wage.

I am getting the certificates from the doctor. Have been told to apply for means tested income support by the jobcentre, although having been denied all money I have little hope.
