Advice needed for unoccupied property insurance

Hi there, wondered if you could please please help me. Been struggling for a couple of months now...
currently we do not have any home insurance, we have a house (its my oh's house) but we are both still living with parents while we are doing it up, money trouble etc have made this 'doing up' take a year and a half and still going (we have ripped the internal part of the house out and re built it, had the external stone sand blasted, new stone wall built, loft converted, new floors walls, staircases etc)
so the property is not in a good 'state of repair' (yet) it gets better by each day, it is unoccupied for more than 30/60 days in a row, and we have no alarm fitted.
So from the above, we have been refused insurance by just about everybody!!!
I have had a quote which was very high, about £500, just for acts of god, which i thought was a bit pointless so declined.
I asked my dad what he thought i should do as he was in a similar situation not long ago, and he said he lied, and if anything (touch wood) happened he would put a blow up bed in there and say he slept there 'some' nights so it isnt unoccupied for more than 30 days in a row.

What can i do!! I have tried a londlords insurers, this was declined as property is not in a good state of repair.

Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated before i sign up with an insurer under false information.

    I was going to say Towergate too.

    If you type unoccupied buildings insurance into google, there are a couple of comparison sites as well.

    It's never cheap though, but you'll get better cover than just acts of god.
    Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.
  • Thanks so so much for your ideas, I have got towergate cover for 6 months, for £382. its a lot, but would rathr pay it than risk all the work we have done.

  • You might be able to get insurance via a broker, look for a local broker in your area. The sort that do everything including commercial.

    Or run the risk of no insurance depending on the area its in. You could minimise risk by turning the electric, water and gas off at the mains every time you leave. In winter you would need to drain the water system or provide some frost protection heating.
    I'd be tempted to move in as soon as possible on your own even if it means roughing it a bit. If your living there then you will be able to apply for normal insurance and you'll get it 'done up' faster as you'll be spending every spare minute fixing something !

    Even staying there one night a week counts as occupancy. I have been away abroad and my son just gets home for the weekend and when I queried this they said it was fine as long as someone was there in the 60 day period.
