sealing damp on wall with pva glue

I have a small damp patch on the wall near the outside doors in the conservatory. I was told not to bother buying the damp seal paint but to get the black stuff off with bleach, let dry and then apply a watered down pva glue mix. Does this really work or is it a load of rubbish?? Advice would be welcome

  • I would concentrate on removing the source of the problem rather than covering it up. Once the damp source is removed, the wall will dry out and can be treated normally.

  • I don't think PVC adhesive will stop the damp. It usally used to seal porous surfaces before paining or wall paper. The damp will move around the edges and come out else where. Best to source the fault for the damp.
  • PVA is no good for doing this, unless you use exterior grade PVA, but as already pointed out you need to fix the cause first and then you could use some stain blocker, which will work much better than pva.
