Cat not using tray?

I'm having a bit of a problem with my cat, he is around a year and a half old and was always fine with his litter tray, a long time ago though he started... pooing (can't think of a better word at the moment :rotfl:) on the carpet by the door instead of his litter tray, we thought it was maybe just when the tray was a bit full so started cleaning it more often but it didn't help, he was still doing the toilet in his tray but sometimes by the door.

Then I split up from my boyfriend and me and my cat moved flats. Now he won't poo in his litter tray at all! Again, he was fine to start with here but the past couple of weeks he has stopped using his tray! I don't know what to do

He does wee in the tray though, not a problem with that.

I'm beginning to lose the plot with him, it's really quite embarrassing when people come round :rotfl:

Yes usually, although there have been a couple of times it's been in a different place. Always quite near the litter tray though.

It may be worth getting a bigger tray? I know pets at home do a really big one. He obviously knows what its for if he is still doining he wee's in there but might not want to go in again to do his number 2s, perhaps with a bigger tray he wouldn't mind so much? Cats are such clean animals they can get a bit hung up on things like this I think. My Tigger spend AGES covering up his buisness, only for me to come up behind him & scoop it all out!

Try putting his litter tray in the place he keeps pooping.

My little girl kept weeing outside of the tray and I popped a second tray where she kept going and straight away she stopped and started using the tray instea.

Tried this, and he just done the toilet where the litter tray used to be :rotfl:

I've tried moving him to the tray mid-poo, never again :rolleyes: I just don't know what to do

the place he normally poo's put something there to stop him going there. Is your cat a house cat? My cat hated using her litter tray for pooing so i trained her to ask to go outside when she needed to go.

You can get small litter trays from Wilkos for about a £1 and Tesco Value cat litter isn't much more. Put a tray in each place he's ever pooed and see what happens...

That's about all I can suggest, apart from spraying a weak vinegar mix onto the carpet where he already has pooed, to discourage him from going there again.

I will try and get another litter tray at the weekend and pop it where he usually poos. I don't think it will make a difference though, he doesn't seem to mind where it is as long as it isn't in his tray.

It's really stressing me out now, I am in a rented flat and if it doesn't stop I don't see how I can keep him

i think you need to try a second litter tray, not move the only one you have to the 'poo-place'.

also, have you tried using a different litter? a softer one perhaps?

i recently adopted a cat and i put his litter tray in one room, separate from my existing cat's tray. however, my adopted cat decided he would pee in one tray and poo in the other! so i think some cats do like to do their business in different spots.

good luck - don't give up - just keep on trying to understand your cat. sounds like there has been some changes for him to get used to, cats are creatures of habit and they can get upset when things change, and this can be reflected in diffeent ways i.e. inappropriate pooing.

I just don't see why it changed well after we had moved house etc. I'd understand if it from when we moved. He has always used the same litter and is fine with it, I have used different litter when they don't have the stuff he usually gets and the same thing happens so I don't think it's the litter, and I hope not because any other litter stinks

Will pick up another litter tray from somewhere, worth a try.
