Possibly the daftest question about mobile broadband

My sister wants to buy her son a laptap for Xmas and doesn't have a landline phone, so we thought about mobile broadband.

Can you use mobile broadband as your sole ISP? Does it give you an email account like AOL does?

Sorry if this sounds a wee bit daft, not very technically minded.

I would appreciate your help.

In this weeks martins tips three are doing a mobile broadband dongle on contract for £5 a month and no other fees - assuming less than 1gb a month use.

It depends where it is used for the speed but usually its not very good at all, not fast for the stuff younsters use like gaming or youtube.

Use web based and free email like yahoo or hotmail, perfectly fine for everyday use.

The contract has a 14 day trial but if you prefer PAYG then its £50 modem fee and £10 a month .

Bottom line is that its better than no internet at all but no where near as good as landline broadband unless you are really really lucky and live next door to a recently upgraded transmitter . You could check the three web sites coverage maps but they tell lies.
Other mobile broadband is available but all seem to get poor reviews.
