Slow connection (0.5mb), any tips?

Ive recently moved house, used to have a 2mb line and now have a 0.5mb connection at best (its just a few yards down the road too!).
Any articles I could read to help speed up the service? Ive read the microfilter thread and have tried multiple filters.
I'd also like to know how those "speed checker" tools work. Im with Sky and the speed checker on there website says that my line only supports 0.5mb max. Is this the absolute max my line supports even if I make improvements to the wiring in the house?
I have 4 telephone sockets around the house. The router is plugged into a master socket through a Sky microfilter and I have an analogue phone plugged into a seperate Sky microfilter.
Nothing else uses a telephone socket.
Thanks.

Enter your 'phone number in their checker to see what BT state you should receive.

Try removing the front cover (2 screws usually) from your master socket and plugging the filter and router directly into the test socket, this effectively disconnects and removes any effects from all the internal wiring.
Remember that a filter must be used with all devices plugged into a socket - 'phones, Sky box, router etc.0 -

The BT test says my line supports a max of 0.5mbps.
Ill try the test socket later on though, but if the test says a max of 0.5mbps is that the max speed I can ever hope for?0 -
Yeah thats the best you can get on your line0
