I suggest saving yourself a lot of hassle by simply using a web browser to send and receive your email. Only use an email client on your main computer, then use POP and as you've already done, set it to leave messages on the server. Then you'll have access to all your sent and received mail regardless of where you log in your email account. The truth is that IMAP and POP email are notoriously unreliable. The only surefire way to access sent email on every computer is to send them from your email providers own server, usually located on the internet.0

OK - just had it confirmed that Tiscali webmail is IMAP compatible.
Can someone tell me how to set up Thunderbird to use IMAP instead of POP or if I need to use another client?
I use Thunderbird and IMAP.
You need to find the Tiscali IMAP settings, I couldn't find them when I looked, hence my suggestion that Tiscali don't support IMAP.
You simply set up a new account in Thunderbird via Tools/Account Settings, and select IMAP instead of POP3, then put in the port settings/security (ssl etc) from Tiscali.
Note IMAP settings will be different to POP3 settings.
Then in Gmail you log in to your webmail and select the "enable IMAP" button.
I cannot see a facility to do this in Tiscali, so I still have doubts whether it will work.
Copy/paste from Tiscali.

Type – You have the choice of POP3 or IMAP
Internet Message Access Protocol or IMAP is the protocol generally used by Hotmail and Yahoo.
Post Office Protocol version 3 or POP3 is the protocol generally used by Internet Service Provider.
The type you require will be defined by the supplier of the mail account you want to add. In the case of Tiscali the ‘Type’ is POP3.Move along, nothing to see.0
