£200 stolen by Barclays Bank!

My wife used a Barclays cashpoint to withdraw £200 from her Abbey account to pay our plasterer.
The cashpoint displayed a message saying "this action cannot be processed, please contact your bank"
At this point she phoned Abbey from her mobile who told her they cannot see any cashpoint transactions for 24hrs, call tomorrow.
She then went up the road to a Abbey cashpoint and withdrew £200 ok.
When she checked her internet banking a couple of days later it showed 2 withdrawls of £200.
She phoned Abbey and lodged a complaint.
A few days later Abbey responed saying they had seen evidence from Barclays showing £200 had sucessfully been withdrawn.
She wrote back to Abbey asking for it to be invetigated further, but they wrote back saying more-or-less the same thing.
Is there anything else that we can do, or do we just have to write the money off.
Thank you.

Were there any suspicious devices on the barclays point? Card could possibly have been cloned0

£200 is a lot of money to "write off"!! I wouldn't let this one go...0

Go to Barclays, explain what happened and ask if the cashpoint is covered by CCTV.
You may be able to get a copy under the Data Protection Act.
Don't give up!0 -
What's the daily limit on ATM withdrawals from the Abbey account?0

I know that cash points get totaled up at the end of the week I think which means that there should be £200 extra in there. Ask Barclays about this.0

Has your wife been sporting any new jewellery lately? A new haircut perhaps??
Seriously though, if you are unhappy with the ATM dispute resolution I would submit a written complaint, asking for a written response. Ask for the communication from Barclays. Banks are much less likely to 'fob off' when putting it in black and white as this can be used as the basis for an ombudsman appeal.0 -
If you are an Abbey customer then it is they who will deal with you and not Barclays.
It is highly unlikely that Barclays would have balanced their machine and responded to an inter bank cashpoint dispute query in 'a matter of days' and without getting your side of the story in writing.
Keep at Abbey is my advice.0 -

My son went to withdraw £30 from HSBC ATM, transaction completed but he did not get any money. He went and tried another ATM and as soon as he put his debit card and did not key in any details, he got £30 without asking. Should he query that, he did check his account, he has been charged only once?0
