Do you think I should complain....

Hi guys........in Dec 2006 I purchased two sideboards and a coffee table from Argos at the combined cost of over £250, frankly the quality is absolutely terrible. In Oct 2007 the sideboards were replaced (with no fuss from Argos) because all the hinges on the doors had snapped, furthermore the runners for the doors keep snapping and had already been replaced 3 times! Now it has happened again, the coffee table is falling to pieces, the drawer runner have snapped on the sideboards, they are completely unusable. Following the replacement we hardly keep anything in them, a few papers/tickets etc) and about 10 Xbox games in the other so they are not overloaded. So my argument is that they cannot be fit for the purpose for which they were intended......anyone agree/disagree?? I definately do not want them replacing with the same funiture however I would accept a "credit note" (for want of a better way of putting it) in the sum of £250 for Argos. What do you think? Thanks

I don't think you've got a chance TBH. They were fit for purpose (they hold junk/you can put a coffee mug on it) it's just that as far as durability goes they're not very good quality, but you get what you pay for and at £250 for two sideboards and a table, I don't think many people would expect them to last very long.

Even if by some miracle Argos agreed to a refund they'd be entitled to give you only a partial refund, I'd guess at about £50. Expecting the full amount back after nearly 2 years of use is unrealistic.

I'd I least write and try, you may only get a few quid in vouchers, but surely its worth the cost of a second class stamp to try?
  • As stated above these are the replacements that have now broken not the originals - these have been used for 10 months......These are double door fronted 2 ft (across) sideboards, there is no way they should only hold a few scraps of paper!!! In the catalogue the thing is holding up a 42 inch TV - mine would be dust under that pressure!!!Possibly worth the price of a stamp methinks....nothing ventured and all that!

Worth having a go, but I agree that you wouldn't expect great quality at £250 for two sideboards and a table. I'd certainly mention the catalogue pick of the TV, though.

If you manage to get anything, you're not going to get £250 back - you've had 2 years' use out of the things.

£250 for 2 sideboards and a coffeee table!! I would be surprised if there was any real wood involved in the manufacture!

Seriously, I think you have had your £250's use out of them.

We have Argos furniture, it cost less than £250 and has lasted three years so far. Granted it looks like its made from recycled paper and chewing gum, but its lasting well, even when it had a 40 kilo plus TV sat on it.

I would write and complain, if you get something out of them well done, if not it's only a stamp.
  • the op has stated as this is the second lot, they have only had 10 months usage not 2 years. I'd definitely say its worth a try, if you had had 2 years then probably not worth it but they should last a "reasonable length of time" and I wouldn't say 10 months is

I remember having mdf type sideboards in the past.Once they had been loaded down with stuff,if you tried to move them, they damaged very easily,I seem to remember them being held together very precariously at times, particularly the flimsy back panels. This stuff doesn't take kindly to being used,in reality.
