Just Buy A Black&white Licence

Once you reach the age of 75, you are entitled to apply for a free TV Licence. If you are over 74, you can apply for a Short Term Licence to cover you for the months up until you reach your 75th birthday, so you only have to pay for the cover you need"

My FIL has been receiving letters from the TV Licencing for the last eighteen months. He gets one a month, every month. The threats range from a hefty fine to possible imprisonment. Obviously, he has a TV licence and is now eagerly awaiting the arrival of the enforcment officers.0

When I moved in June, I bought a new TV and applied for a TV Licence online. No TV Licence arrived until a month later. In that time, I got a letter telling me I needed a TV licence for the telly I'd just bought, and one saying I didn't have a licence and I should get one. Both dated about a week after I applied for the licence. No wonder the licence is so high, it must cost a lot to print all these letters.0

INCOMPETENCE.. and on radio 2 today some civil servant said yes we should retire at 60 because we work harder than private sector. if they were in the private sector they would be sacked before they could get a pension let alone retireDiv 1 Play Off Winners 2007

Ah! The nice tv licencing people.
We don't own a t.v. We have not owned a t.v. for years. Hence we don't need a licence.
We first got rid of the t.v. when we moved back to England after living overseas. We got a letter from the licencing people reminding us to buy a licence. I wrote back saying we didn't have a t.v. They wrote back reminding me that I could get a fine and asking me to double check if I did actually have a telly. "Oh, that square thing in the corner is a t.v.! ... and I've been shoving bread in it trying to make toast".
Anyway, we moved house 6 months ago to quite a rural area. The village never had streets names until recently. The council decided to name the streets and despite the fact that the street sign is opposite my house thw council stuffed up and I was told I lived in another street! Whilst all this was going on I contacted the t.v. licencing people to say that we have moved and to lodge a no licence required note against our new address. They would do this, but refused to put our new correct address on the system saying they could only use the incorrect one as this was the one on theri database. They they tried to tell me (incorrectly) how to have the address amended. The only reason that I was even getting their letters was the our fantastic postie knows the house name.
This is my reply to them (with bits deleted):

Dear Mr xxxxxxx,
Re. your letter dated 27th April 2005 concerning the address of my property. The Address Management Centre for Royal Mail are given their information from their Address Development Department with whom I have already been in touch. The Address Development Department in turn are informed by individual local councils. I have also been in contact with the Strategic Development Services Department at my local council and we are in the process of getting the address listed correctly. It is only the fact that we have a knowledgeable postman that we receive letters addressed incorrectly to xxxxxx Lane.
I am not concerned if the address is listed incorrectly as long as we are listed on your system as legitimately not owning a television. However, please note that should an inspector visit to check this fact he will not be able to find us on xxxxx Lane as this is in another part of the village from where we actually live.
Regards,
xxxxxxxxx

Guess what? They changed the address. Still not had a visit though.
