I have a wireless network set up at home, and work on a laptop downstairs connecting through a wireless connection. Suddenly this morning I cannot connect to any Internet site or receive e-mail or get any connection. BUT the icon in the toolbar says that I am connected and that the signal strength is excellent. Tried re-booting - still problem. Laptop runs WinXP, haven't installed anything recently or updated any software or drivers. Router is working okay. Any ideas?

What did you reboot? Your laptop can be connected to the router with excellent signal strength but if your router is not connected to your ISP you won't be able to surf. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -
I re-booted the laptop a couple of times - no difference. The router must be okay as a second laptop is connecting to the Net through the wireless network with no problems, as is the desktop. Problem only appears to be with the second laptop downstairs. Logically I can only think that there is a problem with the laptop rather than the router but I'm no expert.0

I would reboot the router before doing anything else. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0

Have you tried right-clicking on the 'connected' icon and choosing 'repair'? Or 'view available networks' and try clicking the 'connect' option?
What does you laptop use to receive the routers signal, is it something internal or is it an added card - try removing and re-installing the drivers? Try swopping the laptop wireless cards if they both have external recievers?
I recently bought another wireless modem/router and it seems to be a bit more hit and miss as to whether it connects on start up or not - not being a networking expert I try the more simple, obvious things like rebooting things/re-installing drivers/swopping cards before reaching for the hammer!!!!0 -
Tried re-booting/switching off completely the router and didn't help. What I don't understand is that the icon says I am connected but Explorer won't go to any sites and it won't access e-mail server. Laptop came with an internal wireless thing but wasn't very good so bought an external wireless that plugs into a USB port. I suppose it's possible that this external thing has just "died".0

Can you ping your router? If not you are not really connected as far as passing data is concerned.
Post the result of doing Start, Run, type cmd OK then ipconfig /all in the black window. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -
Tried doing a "ping" but no matter which site I try to ping against it cannot find them. Tried removing external wireless adaptor and using built-in wireless and all the pings just time out. But, icon still says I am connected.0

In frustration been out and bought a new Belkin wireless adaptor = made no difference at all although status thingy says I have connection for only a second then it drops completely for maybe 10 seconds then connects for 1 second and so on.0

Word of warning with belkin adaptors - they may send the wrong drivers with adaptor for the adaptor. I spent hours getting mine to work before i finally decided to see if any new drivers were available to download - turned out the wrong drivers were on the install cd for the model i'd got.0

So you bought a new adaptor before posting the results of ipconfig /all post #7. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0
