Moving on folks...
What use, if any, do cot bumpers have? Apart from looking pretty!
I keep reading that it is better not to use them. Is this still the norm? What is your opinion?
Someone else has said that it is ok to have them, but know when not to use them..
What do you think?
Thanks again all for any thoughts you have on this!

I used them because my son kept on bumping his head against the rails. I know there is a lot of controversy about them, some people saying babies can suffocate, others saying that once they can stand up they can climb out of the cot, so all I can say is only you know your child and you now best. I removed the bumpers when my son turned one I think.0

kids banging against the cot is the norm, we cant wrap them in cotton woll forever. I brought one for my DS, but it didnt last long. HV say they a risk of smoothering ... etc and if you do wish to use one, they advise that it comes off when they can sit up, as they might get tangled in it.
looking back now, i think my cot bumper purchase was a waste of money0 -
We didn't use them for either of ours... and we had no problems with head banging... a friend of mine got rid of hers very early on because it made it really difficult to see her little one when she was checking on him at night from the doorway... she had to go nearer to the cot which woke him up... got rid of the cot bumper and he slept through!
Have you thought about a baby grobag? Bumpto3 they tend to keep the baby in one place reducing the risk of rolling... used them with both of mine.. couldn't live without them!0 -
Cot bumpers are a comlete waste of money . Manufacturers show lovely pictures of the cot in its full glory and if you are a true MSE you will soon realise what are the essentials and what are not. Useful stuff inclue muslin squares -so versatile, Sudocream - so many uses apart from little ones bottom and a bumper pack of cotton wool -for wiping with warm warm , little ones bottom to removing cradle cap .Just my opinion though x0

I have to agree with purplepurple in regards to the sleeping bags.Their arms are not resticted and the don't keep kicking the covers off.I had these with DD3 and thought they were absolutely fab.0

I made one. I wanted curtains to match the wallpaper, but to get the right width, they were 18" too long and covered the radiator. I chopped a bit off the bottom and bought some wadding and ribbon, and made my own bumper.
However, when my son was born, I was told to put him in the cot at the bottom so there was just enough blankets to cover him. They said it prevents cot death as baby can't slip under the blankets and overheat. Doing that meant his head was nowhere near the bumper, so it was pretty pointless having it on!
I ended up using the bumper one winter when my rabbit was poorly, and it made a nice cosy nest for her in the hutchHere I go again on my own....0 -
I use the cot bumper along one side of the junior bed (like a valance) it hides all the stuff underneath the bed lol.0

I have found my cot bumper invaluable as it stops dummy from falling out of cot!Me debt free thanks to MSE :T0

I use the cot bumper now dd's 2 to pad her headboard, as she has woken herself up bumping into it a few times. I shan't bother getting one for baby #2 though, along with most stuff I thought I'd need 1st time round.£2 savers club - £62
Relaunched grocery challenge:
