BT landline disconnection charge

Hello,

I recently moved house and decided I wanted TalkTalk broadband/phone. To do this I was told I would first need an active BT landline. I signed up to BT, got my landline and switched to TalkTalk with no problems. Then, this week BT sent me a final bill charging me 70 pounds disconnection fee. Apparently I entered into a contract even though I never agreed to one verbally or in writing and was not made aware of the disconnection fee. Additionally TalkTalk also did not make me aware that this might happen. I rang BT but they insist the charge stands. Does anyone have any advice?

  • All BT lines acquired through BT retail come with at least a 12 month contract. Penalty for leaving BT retail within that period is as you have found £70.
Many others have found themselves in the same situation but unfortunately TalkTalk persist in being economical with the truth regarding getting a BT line. They could arrange it themselves but choose not to although they use Onetel, a CPW company, to arrange new lines for their existing customers to move home without the need for BT to get involved.
No real hope of getting out of it I'm afraid.

You are lucky it's only £70 disconn, could have been a lot worse.
