Just buying the cheapest car is too simplistic a view. Ladas and Protons were the cheapest cars in the UK but servicing costs and parts were horrendous and their value sank faster than the Titanic.
You need to look at the total cost of ownership over the period you intend to keep it. That includes the purchase price, servicing costs, cost of parts and depreciation.
For example, the BMW Mini ONE when it came out was an expensive car however you could sell it at a year old for more than you bought it for so it was in effect a free car.0 -

I scanned this old Top Gear magazine article and stuck it on the net a while back http://www.an1.co.uk/skodaladaproton/ it gives a list of parts prices for each car and it seems all horses for courses really. What's expensive for one, is cheap for another. But I know compared with those old prices I can pick up an original clutch for a Favorit for £50 (compared with the £87 back then) and new OE rear shoes are £25 (compared with £16 back then).
Actually I assume there will be similar comparison articles of cheapest in the market popping up in some of today's magazines that could be worth a read.0 -

Clever marketing. Was never worth £15,500 in the first place. And when it comes to servicing, parts costs and how often you're likely to need parts with it being French...0 -
It depends when you're looking to buy...almost all manuf'r deals end next week (30th Sep) as it is the end of the 3rd quarter. Pricing on most brands will be revised from 1st October and many brands have already confirmed list price increases from 1st Oct...Renault sneaked one in under the radar last Tuesday too!).
So do you mean cheapest car to buy in the next 7 days...or between Oct and Xmas? For the latter you'll need to wait until after 1st Oct to see what new deals are released. For now, the cheapest one as an unregistered car is a Chev' Matiz 5dr 0.8S at £4,713 in solid paint colours!“Official Company Representative

I seem to remember they were going to start making them in Hungary at some point bit the deal fell through and there were loads in kits waiting to be shipped. Some one bought the kits and built them all up and sold them long after regular production had finished. That was a few years ago though, I'd be amazed if you could sitll buy them now. It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends
And feel I want to die0
