Has anyone noticed a shortage of red lentils recently?
About 8 weeks ago my DH who works for a large national catering company told me that one of his suppliers had hiked up the price of lentils saying there was a shortage developing from their sources in India. Needless to say when he told me I just laughed but picked up 2 packs next time I was in Lidl. For the last 6 weeks my local Lidle have had none in stock, neither has Asda and in Mr T the price has doubled.
If it turns out thwere is an impending lentil shortahe OH will have a fit especially with winter approaching as he is a HM lentil soup fanatic

Oh no. Lentil Dhal and rice has always been one of my v. cheap options. I wonder if the same thing will happen with green lentils and other pulses.0

I'm glad I wasn't imagining it then! Asda only have organic ones at the mo, and Mr T's seem to go up in price each week. I've been buying yellow split peas as well and using these instead of lentils in some dishes, wonder if they'll be in short supply too soon? I'm guessing they need the same sort of growing conditions.
I must admit, I did think it might be all the os-ers using so many lentils now to stretch food further that we had caused a shortage, lol!GC Oct £387.69/£400, GC Nov £312.58/£400, GC Dec £111.87/£4000 -
This is really bad news for pulse lovers and also for the economic and health value these foods give. I was astounded to see the bag of soya mince I used to buy in Sainsburys had gone up from 49p to 98p!!!!!!!!! I shall go and panic buy some lentils now!Grocery Challenge £139/240 until 31/01

I use lots of red lentils - love 'em - and usually get them in big bags from an Asian shop. But the last lot I got a few weeks ago had gone up in price enormously.
Maybe there's a new green tax on them to help reduce greenhouse gases!;)0 -

Do you not think that this sort of post will actually cause a lentil shortage by making people panic buy
The price has gone up (from about 69p to 84p in MrT) but so has everything elseI shall go and panic buy some lentils now!carriebradshaw wrote: »I better stock up too

you can laugh and roll your eyes all you want, but I use a lot of lentils and couldn't get as many as I needed last time I shopped, so will stock up as usual whenever I see them,as they are a good staple for this household so not being able to get them does make me panic slightly and is a big deal for me and others You're lucky you only pay 84p for them they're 98p here currently and no I don't live anywhere where I can bulk buy them in big packs either.0 -

Thank you fopr your lovely sarcastic roll eyes smiley angelnikki. I guess I better crawl under the stone I have been lurking under for the last 2 years and not dare to make a post again asking any sorts of questions. No, I did not think it would cause a shortage and I still do not think it will. If you feel for one simgle moment that making a post here will cause an intenational shortage that catering companies are coming across then I am afraid you are very much mistaken. I simply made the post to see if anyone else had noticed a shortage in the supermarkets.
Thanks to those that were welcoming0 -

Even though someone has actually posted that they will panic buy?I simply made the post to see if anyone else had noticed a shortage in the supermarkets.
I have not noticed a shortage in my nearest MrT.
This exact same thing happened at the beginning of the year with bread flour. (that isnt the thread that I'm on about but I cant find it atm) Someone started by saying that that the price was going to go up because there was a shortage so everyone cleared all the shelves in the supermarkets. The price never went up (except in MrA but that was so they could do a rollback on it) and it is still 48p but there was a massive shortage because people were buying 10+ bags at a time.:A0 -
I'm glad I bought a few bags during a Julian Graves half price clear out not long ago :money:
