Lentil shortage

Mudgekin - keep posting! I'm glad of the info, it made me realise that it wasn't just me thinking that lentils were getting more expensive and not so easy to find!
As for causing a shortage, well I doubt that we have the power to do that, but come and have a look on the feed your family for £20 thread, lentil usage is most def on the up, lol!
I shall again remind oh that he needs to find an Asian supermarket on his trip to Birmingham tomorrow, not so much so that I can bulk buy, but that so I can get the bloomin things for less than Mr T's charge me!
I don't know about people stockpiling bread flour, I know I buy 10 bags of it at a time, but then I bake an awful lot of bread and stuff, the only time I remember shortages was a couple of years ago when the petrol prices went mad and deliveries were stopped to supermarkets. I certainly bulk bought rice when reports started coming in about the bad harvests and prices increasing on world markets, it has saved me a fair few pounds and I'm only just coming to the last of my supplies now, so it lasted about 5 months.
I guess as this is a money saving site, the fact that there is a shortage of lentils will mean a price increase, so pointing this out may save some people money by encouraging them to buy a couple of bags now, whereas before they may only have bought one.GC Oct £387.69/£400, GC Nov £312.58/£400, GC Dec £111.87/£4000 -
Lentils have gone up in Tescos and Sainsburys by me - currently £1.52 per kg bag in Mr T and £1.38 per kg bag in Sainsburys. Asda has only got organic 500g bags ATM.
Useful to know about such price increases.Jane

Thanks Mudgekin for posting this - like Mummysaver I was wondering if it was just me thinking they had got pricy.
On a similar note (in the opposite direction) has anyone noticed that the price of black treacle has fallen dramatically - 26p a tin at present. I can feel lots of gingerbread coming on.“the princess jumped from the tower & she learned that she could fly all along. she never needed those wings.”

I'll believe there's a shortage when I see people suggesting bulking out lentil curry with mince :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

Are red lentils not the same as Massor Dal? I noticed in my asda that in the natco large bags red lentils were more expensive than all the other names of dal. This would be a cheaper way possible of buying them . Have just found this in my search to verify the Indian name of red lentils http://www.kohinoorfoods.co.uk/catalog/view/durbar-red-lentils-masoor-dal-2kg £1.70 cheaper than Tesco if you buy over £32 of goods (free delivery)0

Come on back and keep posting.
I am really glad you posted because I was wondering why the price seemed to have shot up and I could not get them in Lidl.
My DH loves HM lentil soup done in the slow cooker and DDs love home made lentil pate as well.
I am going to have a look in Leeds later in the week and see if I can get some cheaper there."This site is addictive!"
