vultura............ you should have stated in your ad that you'd only accept payment from verified Paypal accounts. Send it recorded if you want to prove it's been posted. Personally I think you've behaved badly. There's minimal difference between a verified and non verified account. ...and out of interest your "buyer's" feedback %age is better than yours anyway!!

If it was me you'd certainly be getting neg feedback...

Why am I the bad guy in all this? I am trying to protect my interests whilst providing decent service levels to buyers.

There are no options for offering paypal with/without verification on listings, if there were I sure would use them. If you read the paypal pages you'd see that having a verified account and confirmed address increases safety. Without it, my sale would not be covered under their seller protection scheme. As for sending it recorded, sure I could have done so, but then I'd have to send proof of delivery to eBay if any claim was made and that would involve further costs and hassle.

Sure my buyers feedback was 100%, but looking at his recent transactions they were all for items of clothing, just a few pounds each.

As for my feedback, sure I have 2 negs out of 161 transactions, over 4 years. One from a guy who felt I didn't need to let cheques clear and the other from a seller, who's misleading listing resulted in me leaving him a negative as he didn't want to refund me or come to some agreement amicably.

    everyone..............

would you seriously sell your expensive product to a bloke you'd never met down the pub who paid by cheque and your mate bob knows a bloke that bought a thing off him for a fiver so he's a 'good bloke'

no, the cheque'll bounce, you'll loose your item and you'll never see the bloke again, you've no comeback on your friend of a friend who just shrugs his shoulders and calls you an idiot.

when money is involved, the seller has every right to back down,
stuff the legally binding contract thing, buyers pull out all too often,

take any negs on the chin, at the end of the day a 160 feedback seller is inherently more trustworthy than a couple of feedback noobie,

if the noobie won't trust that, then tough luck

..........vultura, if you didnt offer a discount as i suggested, more fool you and in future write on your auctions NO PAYPAL FOR LOW FEEDBACK USERS
    money saving my @rse.
I've spent 10x as much as I would if I had never discovered this website :-)

  • Just don't accept Paypal. I've just had a complaint against me from an unverifid buyer. They were covered by the buyer protection but I wasn't covered by the seller protection. I didn't offer insurance with it as I stated on the listing, but I have a bad feeling about how the infallible paypal will feel. How fair is that?

If I were you, I would start a buying account, then when its feedback is over 25, then switch to using that one with 100% positive...

In the vast majority of situations, nothing bad, but there are a few scammers out their who will pay using a stolen credit card, or get the goods sent to a different address so that they can fraudulently complain to their credit card company that they didn't receive them. If seller protection applies in those cases, paypal foots the bill for a refund to the buyer (or real CC owner), otherwise the seller is left out of pocket.

This is very easy. The item is over £50 so post it Special Delivery, that gives you as much protection as you would get anywhere (if it is heavy use a courier).

If you are worried check 192.com to check the surname against the address given. If you are still not happy phone them and get a feel for the buyer. If still not happy don't send take the negative and the corresponding reduced prices you will receive on future sales.

I send items for over £350 to unverified buyers in Reunion. You have to have balls of steel and I am sure I will get bitten sometime but a little trust is required on EBay.

I also send to unverified buyers as well, the only time I would hesitate and take a neg instead is if there was something really dodgy in the feedback. I don't however consider no feedback as being dodgy in itself.

If sellers are reluctant to take paypal without restrictions then in my opinion it would probably be best to consider removing paypal as an option entirely from their auctions as there are a lot of unverified buyers out there.

Also, going back to the OP, if your buyer left a negative now your feedback would posisbly be reduced to such a level that you risk your future sales. If you are already on 198 at around 98% positive, another neg would not be good as it is going to take you down below 96% (someone help me out here with the math please!) . On the other hand your buyer has such low feedback that a return neg means he might just walk away and start a new account anyway.

It's just my opinion of course but I accept that paypal doesn't suit everyone and maybe sellers should think through possible scenarios before ticking the 'I accept paypal' box on all their auctions.

I don't think it will take it down by that much. Total feedback (pos+neg) is about 202 (198/98%), so one more neg will increase total feedback by 1 and leave positive feedback the same --> feedback percentage ~ 198/203 = 97.5%. (I think :D)

Thank you masonic, I was trying to work it out on the back of an envelope and was getting different answers each time. I was working it all back on some feedback I had seen yesterday where 3 negs on a score of around 300 total gave 97% positive only. However, I fully admit I have no idea how ebay work the percentages sometimes.
