Buyer with Unverified Paypal account

Sold an item earlier this week and have received payment via paypal, checking the transaction details the buyers account is marked as "unverified".

I am loathe to send out an item and not be covered by paypals protection (as poor as it might be), I wouldn't worry if the transaction for a couple of pounds, but this one is £50.

Advice please.

Thanks

Well if you listed paypal as a payment option in the auction, then you are obliged to take it, or face negative feedback / a non-performing seller strike.

As far as the protection goes, you are only NOT covered against fraudulent payments and credit card chargebacks. Normal rules apply to disputes started within paypal (or ebay).

I think you would need to make a judgement call based on the buyer. You may want to pull their phone number and give them a ring.

take your pick, personally i'd refuse the paypal payment and tell them

"sorry, but as you're a new user i'm not covered by insurance, i'd rather have you pay by bank transfer / cheque / whatever else, sorry to trouble you like this, but as a goodwill gesture i'll discount the item by £4 if you pay by this method"

basically you'd have paid around £4 in paypal fees anyway, pass this saving onto the buyer, if they're genuine, they'll jump at the chance

if they kick up a stink, they've every right to neg you and file a non performing seller
BUT, personally i'd rather have a neg than be £50 out of pocket!

............mind you, if your feedback as a seller is low, they probably will not be happy to do this...........

Thanks for the replies. Just noticed the address is unconfirmed too. Not much eBay history/feedback on the account, 6 months 5 feedback, 100%.

My feedback is is over 98% from 161.

Refunded the paypal payment in full, explaining briefly why.

Buyer has contacted me, he cannot understand why I have done it, so have explained more via email and hope that he will be able to follow the reasons.

Now I have to wait and see.

jakemuk, yes he'd paid, but its also possible for him to claim the item was never received, get the money back from paypal, who take it from my account and leave me with no item and no payment. At least with a verified account I'd get some protection.

We've both agreed to cease the transaction, and the dispute has already been completed on eBay.

My Paypal was unverified when I started. You should accept the payment and send it out.

Sure, everyone has to start somewhere, but they an easily verify/confirm account details.

As both a buyer and seller I see it from both sides, but at the end of the day its my £ at risk, not the buyers, if anything goes wrong.

I did offer to let him pay by postal order, but he insisted it was by c card only...
  • vultura............ you should have stated in your ad that you'd only accept payment from verified Paypal accounts. Send it recorded if you want to prove it's been posted. Personally I think you've behaved badly. There's minimal difference between a verified and non verified account. ...and out of interest your "buyer's" feedback %age is better than yours anyway!!

If it was me you'd certainly be getting neg feedback...
