Clearance deals in Nottingham Richer Sounds.

That Yamaha is good for £39, but TBH is overkill. It's meant as a surround sound home cinema centerpiece. 70W per channel RMS. I'm guessing you'd have to be careful not to overload the amp with your speakers... which must be MASSIVE, yes?

Speakers are quite big yes, about 3 foot. So would that mean 70 x 4 =280? It wouldnt be a problem I have never had the speakers anywhere near capacity since new and they were loud enough then :D Trying to find a pic and spec list now. Sorry to be a pain but is it just a plug and play job? Sounds very cheap if it is no hassle just plug everything away and go. And how will computer work whe I am trying to switch volume up?
Really do appreciate your help lads I would be lost without you

You're right, the Yamaha would be overkill, but what a bargain!

Sorry, I didn't mean to imply to the OP that you have to exactly match power output to the rating of the speaker, just that there are risks running at high volume with a big mismatch.

Personally, I reckon that anything around 50W RMS or above would be fine. Even the cheapest at Richer Sounds (the Tangent at £60) would probably sound loads better than ordinary PC speakers.

The spec of your speakers looks entirely normal - any general-purpose hifi amp which is designed for 8ohm speakers (most are) should be able to drive them.

Normally you just need to connect the amp the PC audio-out, and then the Volume app in the systray in Windows will let you change the volume on the PC.

Cheers, so will the yamaha work then? I have found the manual and see I connect the speakers to correct ports but no where to connect pc is this same conection as turn table or is it the 3.5mm jack stil? And with it being so cheap(it is mse afterall :p) is there any reason other then over kill not to buy it? As if it is I may as well go ahead no??

From a quick glance at the user manual, it should work fine with just 2 speakers, but is much more complicated than you need! It's designed for a 4 or 5 speaker setup.

All you would need is a 3.5mm stereo jack (assuming that's what you PC's audio out uses - most do) to phono plug lead.

You could use any of the audio inputs ~except~ the turntable/phono one, as this generally has too high a sensitivity.

But... check with Richer before going any further. I've previously seen similar "bargins" on their website, but when you phone them they've always just sold the last one!

Thanks, I had a look at the Tangent and I must say it looks nice and comes with remote and option to add a sub later on if I choose so think it is worth spendng the extra. It looks much nicer to, lot less bulky and is made for the job I want it for.
Thanks so much for everyones help I will be popping in on Friday after work now and hoping they have one in stock. Then its time to boom boom boom some hardcore trance and electro beats and pretend I am still on the white isle :j
  • I'm going to go back to my original point - running speakers with an underpowered amp might lead you to damaging the speakers especially if you turn it up - I don't know how much you have to turn it up but I wouldn't go with with anything under half the speaker rating (actually I wouldn't go below 3/4 of the speaker rating). Perhaps the Yamaha is sufficient as long as you take care - I'm not sure I would trust Acoustic Solutions to provide accurate ratings anyway. I would say that driving a 220 watt speaker with a 50 watt amp is to be avoided unless you keep things fairly quiet. Also with this combination the speakers can sound really bad.

    The Tangent looks entirely unsuitable.

I'm driving a pair of speakers rated at 200Watts with a 50W amp and it's never been a problem. I've never gone above two-thirds volume, because that would just be too painful (maybe even hearing-damaging) in a normal sized room.

I would avoid using a power amp unless you know that the audio output on your PC is well-behaved. Two of the PCs that I use are not, and output very high-volume signals as the PC boots up (one a loud "crack" and the other a series of very loud clicks). With a power amp you have no simple way to prevent that getting to your speakers at full volume.

I confess I didn't look in detail at the entry-level Tangent amp, but didn't notice anything obvious that would make it unsuitable.

So do you think that using an amp of say 200watt max is more suitable so is 100 on each speaker instead of 40?

Your right about power amps, perhaps not a great suggestion from me. The Tangent though is only 40 watts and if you "boom boom boom some hardcore trance and electro beats", this suggests loud to me and I can see some of potential for nasty distortion and the problems you described above.
