Painting coving .. help settle a tiff, please!

We have recently had 5" Blue Hawk plaster coving professionally fitted. The ceiling and the coving have been painted white and hubby is now ready to cut-in along the walls with a coloured paint.

He is adamant that the lower, return lip of the coving should be painted to match the wall colour. I, on the other hand, firmly believe that it should be the same colour as the ceiling. My 'evidence' for this is that you don't paint the top edge of a skirting to match the wall colour, nor the return lip of a door architrave.

Words like "idiot" and "it's common sense" flew for a few moments before we decided to stop for a cuppa, and we ended up laughing at the little burst of temper!

Given that we can only do one thing or the other, the casting vote lies with you guys! What do you do when painting coving?

Mine is the same colour as the coving, ceiling. ( No I told you so, please).

Try it this way first and if it doesn't look right paint it the same colour as the walls.

Same colour as coving, definitely. And the coving should be the same colour as the ceiling. :)
  • I've always known it to be the same colour of the ceiling. Think it would look daft any other way to be honest.

You're right, he's wrong. Now you have to tell him that diplomatically !
.................:)....I'm smiling because I have no idea what's going on ...:)
  • I showed him that the general consensus of opinion supported my point of view. Whether you can call me saying "my way or go away" as putting it diplomatically, I'm not too sure - but I'm certain he'll forgive me as I promised him his favourite roast dinner for tonight's meal!

    Thanks, one and all.

In our house, the coving is the same colour as the ceiling and the walls. Our walls have colour up to the picture rail, then the picture rail is done in white gloss. The wall above, the coving and celing are in white emulsion. (And the bottom of the picture rail is white gloss too:D )

(Then I spray paint all the picture hooks that hang off the rail white, so that they blend in too)
  • Where do blokes get these daft ideas????

Me and my OH had this same argument a while back...OF COURSE it should be the same colour as the rest of the coving (white) My OH does things with paint that really riles me, for instance, he spent hours once cutting in the tops of the skirting boards in the colour of the walls, when the rest of them were white gloss...they looked absolutely bluddy awful...I had to re-prep and repaint the whole lot.

Tell him to put down the paintbrush and step away from the paint....now...!!!
