New Hard Drive

Options
I'm looking at installing a new additional hard drive in my PC.

Found this Maxtor one at ebuyer.

There are also similar spec Seagate and Hitachi ones at a few pounds more - any comments?

Would they be ready and straightforward to install as I've never done it before?

    is your existing one sata?
    I don't know.

The original hard drive in the pc broke and a friend at work put in a small (10gb) replacement and installed windows on it. He suggested runing a second drive in tandem to this for storage.

I don't really want to go down the route of reinstalling windows etc
  • Sound like it's not SATA then, if you could find out the computers model or the motherboard model it would help
Nothing to see here, move along.

Just had a look and the current drive is Fujitsu MPF3102AT, googled it and it's a Fujitsu 10.2 GB 5400 RPM IDE Hard Drive.

Don't know how to find the motherboard model and don't want to go poking round in there!!

You need one of these here then.

PC wizard here should inform you about the MB.

Those were the drives I was also looking at (Seagate and Hitachi) - is there anything in particular spec wise I should consider?

I've installed PC Wizard - where do I find the motherboard details - is it the same thing as mainboard?

Manufacturer, warranty, buffer size, price etc. etc. different users will give you different opinions.

PC Wizard says for mainboard internal connectors:
Primary IDE : On Board IDE
Secondary IDE : On Board IDE
Is that the relevant info you were looking for?

So basically I need an IDE drive rather than a SATA drive.

    This Hitachi one seems ok.

or this one (for Alienrik) http://www.ebuyer.com/product/122459

Would both a 2.5" or a 3.5" fit, or do I need to check inside again?

Normally a 3.5" for a desktop. The choice is yours regarding spec, manufacturer etc.

The only differences between the two seem to be:
Interface type: ATA-133 (Hitachi) and ATA-100 (Seagate)
Seek Time: 8.5ms (Hitachi) and 11ms (Seagate)
    Are they both compatible?
What about fitting - will they be easy? And will they need formatting or something?
