It's been a bit odd here. A couple of times I was asked if I wanted to download it, but it seemed nothing at all happened when I clicked to say yes.

I think it must have downloaded in the background sometime - now there's about 500 MB in a folder in Software Distribution\Download - but the last time it asked me if I wanted to install, I clicked yes by mistake, then cancelled it as it was time for bed.

Now it's not repeating the offer, as there's no yellow shield come back in the tray. Can I go to an update exec file I've found in that download folder to start it, or will I have to wait and see if the next update will trigger it (it didn't a couple of weeks ago)?

Can you not just goto the 'windows update' site?

OK - just disabled internet connection via the router and turned off the AntiVir Guard on Avira.
Tried installing SP3 again, but still no joy.
Now, I vaguely remember a problem with some AMD processor machines built with Intel images that were causing problems.Does anyone know if this has been fixed yet?

BTW, the update site says I've already downloaded the Service Pack. Does anyone know where it's hidden so I can delete it and see if it helps to download from scratch?

They mention a hotfix here ~

I had that problem, I've posted the workaround quite a few times. Although I recently intalled XP from scratch and didn't see the same problem when I updated to SP3.

OK - just installed the patch and am now downloading the SP3 file.
Will disconnect from the net, disable the guard on Avira and try installing again - I'll be back in a bit to let you know how I get on.

OK - just installed the patch and tried again to install SP3.
Still no joy - still getting the same error messages regarding the registry entries.
Cannot back up registry key HKCR\.DVR-MS
and if I ignore that I get
Cannot backup registry value HKCR\.DVR-MS,\'Perceived type, video\'

    Anyone any ideas?

Out of interest ~ When you go onto 'windows update' are there any OTHER updates you can make? If so id be giving them a go first

maybe, but it's already downloaded to here

the folder has about 500 MB of dll files and so on, and in update folder within it is a eula.txt file that says service pack 3 in it, and update.exe which says Windows Service Pack Setup when the cursor is hovered on it

what I wondered is if anyone knew if it would start it all from there

The only other update is for SQL Server service pack 4. I did have SQL server installed but I uninstalled it after uninstalling a new version of Visual Basic.
Still offering me the update, even though it won't install.
