adding memory to laptop advice please

Options
I have a new Laptop which only has 1gb of ram, obviously it is running vista, so I would like to increase the ram to 2gb.
I've been to the crucial site and they have not got my model listed but it has 2 slots and can take up to 2gb apparently so should I buy another 1gb stick, or should i replace both so they are the same make?

  • which laptop is it?

Are you sure it has 1 x 1gig and not 2 x 512mb sticks (meaning both slots are already in use). because if its 2x512 sticks and you only have 2 ram slots you will need to buy 2x1gig sticks.

Check before you go off buying things.

  • yes sorry i should have said, i have used crucial & system analyser and they both said that it has 2 slots and one of them is empty, its an advent btw
  • cool.thats good.

Now the expansion RAM slot should be easily accesable from underneath, one screw and the plate should just lift off and the ram slot available.

what model number is it, there might be some tutorials available.

  • its an advent 5311 there aren't any tutorials as I have looked. i have found the cover for the slots..now all i need is a screwdriver that will fit!
  • Excellent nice one.

http://www.measham.force9.co.uk/advent/laptop/5311.htm is all I could find, I think its like my compaq presario in that one slot you need to remove the keyboard to get at, and the second slot is underneath the motherboard and accessable from the panel at the bottom.

  • right i have gone out and bought a set of precision screwdrivers, took the back off and found the slots, at first i thought it was just one slot but on looking i see that there is one underneath the existing memory, they have put it the top slot instead of the bottom one! so i wil have to take that out to fit the other one, hopefully without breaking it!
